What most boggles the mind at the new Chadstone, launched this morning with the visionary Gandels, a brace of celebs and blast of gold streamers, is its remarkable, undulating vaulted roof; a feat of engineering akin to medieval flying buttresses. It goes on forever and ever or seems to, a spectacular skyscape above the malls' vast and, frankly, quite lovely new precinct of shops, food court, entertainment and chill spots. Those who know me also know my very unfashionable passion for a good mall; all the gloss, noise and texture of humanity's intriguing tapestry, observable with a certain delicious anonymity if you know where to park yourself and a macair. Chadstone has always been my fave. I devoted a whole column to it at The Age once, a kind of ode to Chadstone with a tiny side of Westfields I have also known. Chadstone nails that atmosphere of luxury and occasion (so elusive, even some of the swankest precinct that should get it, don't) within a welcoming, egalitarian social and architectural framework. Everyone, in other words, (in hoodies pushing prams or follicles-to-toe designer) feels like they're SOMEWHERE at Chadstone. Well this morning, my favorite Somewhere got a little bit swanker (around $600million swanker but don't quote me) and more welcoming.
