So Theo had a really crappy father. His mother died giving birth to him and his father could never look past that, he started to drink and always blamed his child for it, making a big part of the boy blame himself too. He would punish him by beating him up pretty badly, what made him grow up without a parent figure and scared. Theodore comes from a small town, and his father was living there his whole life, he was friends with pretty much every police officer, so the boy always thought he had nobody to help him and he never asked for help.
The only person he trusted in town were his literature teacher, who always tried to help him even if the man had no idea what was really going on, and a friend of his mother who gave Theo his first job, in a diner after school. The would sometimes take him home to have dinner with them and would allow for him to crash at her house when she could see that the last thing he wanted was to go back home, but he didn’t took her offer often, his father beatings were always worse when he spent any night away.
His father died when he was sixteen, got into a car accident for driving drunk and didn’t survive. The only relative he has was an uncle that he had never met before, the guy went over and looked nice the first week, but when he realized his brother in law had no money anymore he gave Theo a couple of bucks and took off. He couldn't ask his mother’s friend for help, the woman didn’t had that much money herself and a family of her own to take care of, so he decided to drop out of school and take another job. The only thing he wanted to do first was tell the one teacher who cared for him, who was always impressed with Theo work (to be fair literature was the only class he actually tried to do well, he liked the books bc they allowed him to live a life better than his own) and made him believe that he could actually do something with his life. Of course, all of that went out of the window now. But to his surprise, the man wouldn’t let him drop out, he talked with Theodore for hours and hours until he could convince him to come live with him, and don’t give up on his education. That’s what made Theo decide to be a teacher if he could help only one student, make their life better like that one teacher did for him, he would be happy with himself.
After he finished uni and started teaching he found one big problem: He never found out how to deal with people, especially younger ones. Besides his teacher and his mother’s friend he really didn’t had no one he actually talked to, not with small talk or about his life anyway. He never figured out how to let people in, how to trust someone new, and apparently, he was unapproachable. None of his students saw him as a bad teacher, far from it, he was fair and always made sure everyone could catch up and understand, but it caught his ears that he didn’t had a face that made people wanted to ask for help, and that he always looked unhappy or angry with something (what wasn’t far from the truth, but also not the image he wanted to give). Except for a couple of people students who have “crushes” on him, nobody was brave enough to come talk with him about anything, but he figured it was better than being seen as an asshole and a crappy teacher.
Things changed when he met River tho. He could remember like it was yesterday, the new bright teacher who just arrived. He could see that the dean was introducing them, talking about something, but it was like Theodore brain couldn’t catch up, couldn’t hear anything. He knows it sounds ridiculous but it was like River had a light just for himself, and it was shining so bright, daring Theo to come closer, even if it meant to burn himself. The dean caught his attention back when he asked if Theo was okay with showing River the school and explaining everything he needed to know, and he was nodding before he could stop himself. It was a really awkward first meeting, Theodore was usually bad with people, even worse if it was someone as beautiful as that, who made him feel... things. It was weird. It wasn’t like Theo didn’t had his fair share of sleeping around, it was easy. He wasn’t dumb and knew he was someone that people found attractive, it wasn’t hard to find someone interested in a one night stand when he wanted to get off. They went to the person house or a hotel, never his, they fucked, he got his things and walked out. He never slept with them, never gave them a change of anyone seeing him vulnerable. And there he was, this guy who he just met, and Theodore wanted to know him, was actually interested. It was scary and was much as a part of him who wanted to get away, there was a way bigger, louder, part that wanted to just get closer.
Somehow he managed to not fuck it up enough to make River stick around after that first day, and they slowly got to know each other. The more Theo got to know about the other man, the more he wanted to found out, and not just that... He wanted to let River in, he wanted to let him know him too. But he know he couldn’t just throw himself into the new relationship, whatever it was and whatever they would end up as. He couldn’t just drag River for a mess that he didn’t even knew how to deal with himself. So after a couple of months, when he realized it didn’t looked like River was going anywhere, he started to clean up his mess. He actually did something he knew he should had done years ago, that his teacher and his mother’s friend said it would be the best for him, and he finally went around to look for professional help. He started to see a therapist and slowly found out how to deal with his shit.
Around one year later he actually got enough courage to ask River around, and somehow this beautiful man agreed to do so. Somehow he was lucky enough to not make River run away, even after he was brave enough to tell him everything, all the mess, and River still stuck around. He still got awestruck sometimes, how River didn’t run away, how he stayed even after he got to know everything, how he accept him for what he is and loved him for what he is. Enough to go live with him. Enough to marry him. To stay with him for 8 years and not stop loving him since.
The change didn’t just helped him with his husband but also with his students. He knew a big part of him still saw him as the grumpy unapproachable teacher, but he had a couple of students who talked with him now, who asked him for advice. There was still a lot he had to work on, but he was definitely for happy now.
