Drawing Transformations Project
This is the work of the incredibly versatile visual artist Kate Bingaman-Burt whom I have chosen to study as part of my drawing project. Her work looks at the meanings behind objects and she has been studying everyday objects and purchases made by herself and others, trying to gain an understanding of the links that people attach to certain objects.
Kate Bingaman-Burt is a Portland, USA based illustrator who has been involved in many projects such focused mainly around consumerism including Daily Drawings and Purchase Documentation in which she has drawn the individual items that she has purchased each day. Bingaman-Burt is a versatile artist and has worked in many areas of visual art such as typography, painting and photography and of course illustration.
Bingaman Burt’s relationship with consumerism began in 2001 when American media began to promote shopping in order to boost the economy. She started to document the items that she purchased, attempting to find the stories behind other people’s purchases. Bingaman-Burt began to interview people within American Superstore Target, photographing their purchased items and trying to establish an understanding of people’s relationships with certain objects.
As a punishment for her debts Kate Bingaman-Burt began to draw each Credit statement that she received until the date that she was out of debt. From this her daily drawings were born, although she found that she wanted to study something less ‘depressing’.
She has been involved in projects where people would email images of stolen items and of mixed tapes, and she would draw them. Especially with the mixed tapes where she developed an interest in the way that people apply emotions to inanimate objects.
