Story: Hearing the thunder that heralded the impending rain, Evelyn quickly took Caleb's arm and tried to drag him under some nearby trees. She couldn't use her magic there. She knew Caleb was more reasonable than most of the townspeople, but... What if he got scared of her? What if he didn't want to have anything to do with her if he found out she was a Witch? He understood why she didn't want to get wet in the rain or have her dress covered in mud. Autumn was approaching, one of the worst times of the year to catch a cold and wash clothes. But she sounded terrified. Was she afraid of lightning? Evelyn didn't notice a stone in the path and stumbled. Both she and Caleb fell to their knees. It was late, and the drops began to fall. Evelyn squeezed her eyes shut, waiting to feel the burns. But instead, she felt cold. The drops were cold, though not as cold as the snow on The Knee. Evelyn looked up at the sky in disbelief. A rain that didn't cook you alive? Humans had no idea how lucky they were. Such was their fascination that Evelyn didn't notice that the scarf hiding her ears had loosened to the point where the wind blew it away. Much less did she notice the look in Caleb's eyes. His look wasn't one of revulsion. His look wasn't one of disgust. It was a longing look... He had always been fascinated by anything that was different.
Based on the "Longing Look" trope. I have a headcanon that something might have happened to make Evelyn trust Caleb enough to reveal that she was a witch. Well... here, Caleb sees Evelyn's ears for the first time. He simply assumes she's "different." And she becomes convinced that Caleb really is more open-minded than other people in town.
