what is Skam, and where are you watching it?
Skam is Norwegian show about a group of teenagers, and every season focuses on a different character (there are three seasons so far). It’s a bit tricky to find episodes with English subtitles, but there is a certain magical Google drive with really helpful instructions.
You could say that it’s a bit like Skins in that it strives to show a realistic portrayal of teenagers and what they get up to; there is plenty of drinking, sex, weed smoking, etcetera. What really drew me in is how well-written it is. People sound like actual people (these kids curse like sailors), characters are allowed to be flawed and make mistakes and learn from them, and it doesn’t shy away from the Big Topics like racism, sexism, mental illness, religion, and so on. Things are called by their name and openly discussed in a way that you don’t see on television very often, especially between characters this young.
So yes: very highly recommended. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s Deep, it has female friendships and queer characters and characters of colour and it’s just so good you guys. Part of why I’ve been spamming the hell out of it is because I want other people to start watching it as well so they will talk about it with me!
