Highlighting: The Plus Bus - “You Are In A Body-Positive Zone”
Today I want to highlight a boutique located here in Northeast Los Angeles called The Plus Bus! The Plus Bus started up in 2015, and was created by fat women for fat women. Jen Wilder and Marcy Guevara-Prete wanted to create a safe space for plus-sized baddies, and have successfully been running this boutique for 6+ years. I follow the Plus Bus on Instagram, where they serve their audience fatshion inspiration and hold livestreams where they sell clothing items in a sort of live-auction style. Just a few weeks ago, Lizzo sent over heaps of her clothing to sell to Plus Bus customers. At this boutique, you can buy, sell, and trade clothing from sizes 12 and up.
As a fat girl, I love this idea and see the store as a safe space. There have been countless times where I had trouble finding flattering clothing that fits well, as most stores hold clothes for conventionally thinner bodies. This is an issue for so many fat women, and they are excluded and erased from many popular, and a lot of times affordable stores. Yes, bigger sizes means spending more money for fat women. I see this all the time where for example a t-shirt is $8 for sizes XXS-L, but $14 for sizes XL and up. Although there are a handful of plus size stores, their fashion and styles are very outdated and not flattering for certain bodies. Here at the Plus Bus, fat influencers often send their clothes over, and are much more in style and current. You can find almost any kind of item of clothing, handbag, or pair of earrings that actually fit!
The Plus Bus is helping create a safe, positive, and comfortable open space for fat women that they often do not have in most stores. This boutique also helps in creating a freeing and happy shopping experience. The Plus Bus recently moved to a bigger storefront in Highland Park, and if you are a fat baddie I encourage you to support Jen and Marcy’s business!
