A Surprise
Their mission was a success. Yet another bit of magic had been returned to the land and the acolytes were slinking off into the shadows to lick their wounds.
Xayah was still out of breath from the ordeal. She had to loop around the entire temple, twice. It was a grand, old temple too. One that had been built to worship the sun that rose over the mountain it rest atop of. The old, crumbled and winding pathways made running difficult in a pinch. Thankfully the terrain was something she had dealt with her entire life, and gave the pursuing assassins a hard time. They nearly tripped over themselves, going after her, getting caught in tight places or bumping into one another as they tried to converge on her.
She had to admit, her new partner in crime was doing wonders for her efforts. He was also admittedly good at keeping attention on himself- perhaps his most defining quality. No, definitely his most defining trait.
A golden blur would streak by in her peripheral, followed moments later by enraged black shadows. At least a few dozen of them. It was almost impressive. Xayah rejoined Rakan at the temple’s entrance, the old stone softened by time and plant life. “Not bad for a beginner.” She admitted, a relieved little smirk spread across her face when she caught sight of him rounding the opposite corner.
The blue flush of magic still pulsed around them, revitalizing the surrounding mountain and Xayah watched as she always did. This was her reward for a job well done, and even as an adult the sights captivated her. The raw wonder of it all reflected in her golden eyes. “We still have a long way to go... But at least the view is nice.” She commented quietly, as they stood side by side, ruffled but mostly unharmed.
It was a beautiful moment and she was very glad she had Rakan to share it with.
