There He Is

If you are the sort who has hundreds of holiday photos, go back and look at them again, one by one. Then again. Then again. Look at the people who are not the subjects of the photo, not your family, not your friends. You won’t notice him in any given single photo, but look and look again and you might have that moment.

There he is, in the background of a shot of you as children, on a holiday in the West Country, a week of ice creams and donkey rides and jellyfish stings. He’s unremarkable, a small man in a blue shirt, with black-rimmed glasses, standing a little way behind you, staring off into the distance as if he’s thinking.

There he is, at the zoo, in a queue for the circus, sat on a bench in the park.

And there he is, in the background of a photo taken in a bar in Spain, twelve years later, blue shirt, black glasses, standing by the door of the bar looking out, almost hidden by you and your friends, your laughing faces shiny with sweat and drink.

There he is, sat at a table for one in a restaurant, standing looking in a shop window, walking along the beach.

There he is again, in that beautiful photo you took of a bridge at dawn this week, in a nearly empty city, just joggers and early morning commuters beating the rush and people walking bleary home from a long night out, and a small unremarkable man in the same blue shirt, looking no different to that first photo, no older, standing by the side of the bridge, take away coffee in his hand, staring down into the water as if he could read the future in it.


There he is, there he is, there he is, there he is, there he is.
