This series has gorgeous maps and some of the best bonus content of any book I’ve read. There is a bunch of cool illustrations at the end of the last book, a dictionary of Basawar words, a family tree, and an extra short story! It’s so sad that they’re out of print! I’m holding on to hope that one day @blindeyebooks will do a relaunch! 🙏 • • • ❓Have you ever read a series that didn’t have a map that REALLY needed one? 🗺 I can’t believe The Queen’s Thief series didn’t get a map until the FIFTH book! Another series that really needed a map was Doctrine of Labyrinths by Sarah Monette. “He stared down the row of brick buildings. A hazy gold glow radiated from above as a gas streetlamp ignited. Another lit up, and then another, all the way down the long, winding street. Jarring noises from carriages, and street hawkers ringing bells and shouting, came at him. He smelled roasting nuts for a moment. Then the strong scent of blood that clung to his body engulfed it....this had to be Basawar. Probably the city of Nurjima. A repulsed, nauseated feeling welled up in him.

ANYWAY

Here’s something I completely missed on my first read: Gray Space can be used to communicate over distance. I mean, I did understand that the high priests and the Issusha oracles were communicating over distance, but what I didn’t realize was that any ushiri could do it, and we actually see Ravishan using gray space to communicate with Rousma. It seems like that’s also what the Payshmura were doing to Fikiri on the steps when they whispered curses and insults to him to try and get him to fail. I definitely didn’t pick on on that, but on my reread I caught John recognizing the voice of Dayyid as one of the voices from the steps.

Can someone write me a fic in which Kyle whispers love poems to John each night that they spend apart? (circa Basawar Holiday)
