Song Review: Galactic feat. Theryl “The Houseman” DeClouet - “Can’t You Believe”

Listen to me sing, it’s comin’ from the heart, Theryl “The Houseman” DeClouet’s voice rings on “Can’t You Believe,” a posthumous digital single with his former band Galactic.

A swampy mix of New Orleans jazz and funk run through a rock ‘n’ roll blender set to Little Feat, the song finds the moribund DeClouet sounding strong and optimistic as Galactic, augmented by a chorus of backing vocalists and a horn section, play with celebratory purpose.

You and me, look forward to many nights and days, he sings on what may be his last recording.

DeClouet was 66 when he died in July after battling long-term health problems that forced him to leave Galactic in 2004. He had been working on the single with his former bandmates, who released it - billed as Galactic feat. Theryl “The Houseman” DeClouet - to help the family with medical and funeral expenses.

It’s a great cause. And - bonus - the song is pretty rad, too.

Former Galactic Singer Theryl “Houseman” DeClouet Dead ay 66

Theryl DeClouet - the former Galactic vocalist known as “Houseman” - died Sunday in New Orleans, where he had been in hospice after battling long-term health issues that forced him to leave the band in 2004.

DeClouet was 66. The band announced the death of their “good friend, mentor (and) musical collaborator” on social media “with deep sadness and a heavy heart.”

”He taught us so much about life, music, the music business and how to become the men we are now,” the band said. “We will miss him immensely and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

DeClouet appeared on four Galactic studio albums - and the concert LP We Love ‘Em Tonight: Live At Tipitina’s - between 1996 and 2003. After leaving the band because of health issues in 2004, he continued to make sporadic appearances with the band on stage.

Writing separately on Facebook, Galactic drummer Stanton Moore cited his friend’s love of life and “his inimitable voice, his infectious personality, and his unforgettable storytelling” in calling him “a unique and special individual” who was key to the band’s success.

”I truly feel that his belief in us in the early days made us believe in ourselves. It is that belief that has gotten us to where we are now,” Moore wrote. “We couldn’t have done it with out you House. I am eternally grateful and will love you always.”
