i-want-destiel reblogged your post:So I actually thought the new episode was kind of...
errr they way they handled Anderson for sure; not at the beginning, I thought that was okay, but his decline and awkward 'whoop whoop I'm crazy' scene right in the middle of the bomb defusing? Yeah, that was something. More than anything I'm tired of these potentially great characters being made the butt of the joke by their own creators. It seems like wasted potential to me I dunno.
The fact that John and Sherlock never really had it out either. I get that Sherlock is a little unraveled at the moment, but I just can't see this ending well, logically. John needs to get some kind of legitimate closure from this whole fricking thing or it's going to be more awkward and needless drama IN a drama.
Also the jokes about John's sexuality. I used to credit them for making a statement about how two men cannot have an intimate friendship without being hassled for it, but now it's just become a joke. I don't really understand the point anymore? Like, I say the screen caps with John and Mrs. Hudson before I saw the episode today and I assumed that the "Who is he" thing was a fandom joke. I was...very surprised.
That said, I do like the way a lot of things were handled. I mean, I didn't hate the episode, by any means. I love Mary, and John's reaction to Sherlock coming back was fantastic. Everything I wanted and more. Lestrade too, and yeah everyone. The initial reactions were great. I also loved the expansion on Sherlock and Mycroft's relationship, especially the snarky way Sherlock told his brother that he's worried for him. I also love how off his game Sherlock is. It's pretty strongly hinted that he got in over his head for those two years he was gone, and it has taken a toll on him.
I also enjoy his interactions with Mary. He didn't immediately warm up to her, but he also doesn't hate her. He seems almost mildly interested, and I can kind of dig that. He's testing her out, but not trying to run her off like he did John's old flames.
All in all, a lot of good things, but I was distracted by the things that I REALLY didn't like, and the awkward transitions and the slightly patronizing plot/writing kept me from fully enjoying it. But I can see why people like it! What is good, is VERY good, and it would be what I prefer to take from the episode, in all. I just need some time for everything else to settle first.
