The reason for that is that Ghana was in the middle of the Trans-Saharan (across the Sahara) salt and gold trade. North africa had large amounts of salt, but lacked gold. West africa had many gold mines, giving it a lot of gold, but it didn’t have salt. Eventually, they started trading. The empire of Ghana was in the middle of this trade, and it required each traveller pay a small fee to pass through Ghana safely. Ghana gained wealth due to the large amounts of traders crossing through it. Image result for triangular tradeGhana became famous throughout the world because of its wealth. Ghana was so famous for its wealth that European flags of Ghana depicted a king holding a gold nugget in his hand. Ghana jealousy guarded its wealth, and the location of the gold mines were a secret. Travellers often travelled in a caravan, a large group, when crossing the Sahara. This kept them safe from thieves and robbers. Later, a new trade called the triangular trade started. The trade was between Africa, Europe, and the New World (the Americas). Food and goods from Europe were shipped to Africa, slaves from Africa were sent to the new world, and sugar from the Americas was sent to Europe. Slaves were needed in the Americas to maintain the many gold and silver mines in South America. This started the slave export from Africa that would continue for more than 200 years. #hkthbaby #nubeginning #Book coming soon called #itstrictlybusiness #lifeisforliving #blackhistory (at London, United Kingdom)
