This map comes from the Recueil de voyages de Mr Thevenot. It is the very first printed map of the Mississippi River and the first to use Lake Michigan as a place name (’Lac de Michigami’).

Part one, ‘Découverte de quelques pays et nations de l’Amerique septentrionale’, is the first publication of Claude Dablon’s account of the 1673 expedition by the French Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet and the Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette along the course of the Mississippi River. They travelled as far as the Arkansas River and to within 700 kilometres of the Gulf of Mexico. 

The accompanying map was engraved by Jean Baptiste Liebaux and oriented with north to the right.
