I haven't finished it yet, but I thought it was really good so far. They did a pretty good job of explaining what was going on so I don't think you necessarily have to read the books first. :)

The books are good and it is fun to read them beforehand to get all the references, but the show is AMAZING by itself. You can always go back and read them later on. ��

and as for the king, Rick O’Connell, he is basically me in male form and i adore him. he is everything.
