Thief (1981) dir. Michael Mann
I have run out of time. I have lost it all. So I can't work fast enough to catch up. I can't run fast enough to catch up. And the only thing that catches me up is doing my magic act.

I was catching up on filing yesterday and re-listening to the Thief DC with Michael Mann and James Caan in preparation for next week. I nearly forgot just how discordant Actor and Character are in personality and how amusing it is to hear the aging Caan, still Mr. Giggles when this was recorded in 1995, with his Old School Noo Yawk accent that he was so diligently repressing (with a few slip ups, here and there) for the sake of Natively Midwestern Frank. The additional contrast with Mann's Imperturbable Chicago Deadpan is comic enough that it takes most of the hurt off an otherwise bruising story, and I was mostly laughing at the rapport between the two of them. Which is good, because I will definitely be crying in my theater chair when this screens in 35mm in Williamsburg.
