I’m always hesitant to dole out advice as if I’m some sort of authority on being a filmmaker (like I’ve said before, I have no idea what I’m doing) But I have had people (usually students) ask for advice on how to get started with different aspects of filmmaking and the best I can do is share how I got started.
In regards to film editing, (something Akira Kurosawa considered one of the most important parts of filmmaking to understand) I’ve read a couple of books I felt were useful and are the usual recommended books to read on the subject (obviously for a reason) which are In The Blink of an Eye and On Film Editing.
I also found the youtube channel “This Guy Edits” to be super useful as it gives you a behind the scenes look at how he edits the projects he works on. Other than that, the most important part I feel has helped me develop my skills as an editor is to practice editing as much as I can (I usually learn the most by doing.)
I’m lucky enough to have gotten a lot of practice in editing by creating videos for this fashion store for a couple of years now, but if you can’t find work as an editor right away, you could shoot and edit your own short films (something I also try to do my free time) or just study how movies/videos you like were edited (the way I did this was by pulling scenes/videos off of youtube and dropping them into my editing software. I would then chop them up to see how it was constructed.)
