Artist: Rachel Jones
Jones is an emerging artist who works across mediums, creating sculpture, installation and performance art works. The conceptual interests found in Jones’ work lie in gender issues, arts participation, and exploring facets of anxiety. Using personal experience, societal discourse, and reference to art history, Jones builds a layered narrative within her work. Jones’ art making is often a way of working through personal aspects of life while also taking the opportunity to make comment on and learn more about what is going on around her. Jones uses performance to communicate with an audience, which may sometimes be confronting, giving the audience the opportunity to think deeper about issues around them. Her performance and photographic work is a way of exploring anxiety while also considering gender roles and the way society can dictate how people interact and behave. The way we speak with different people, and the way we choose to dress, amongst other things, is a way of expressing ourself. We all perform to some degree, each day. Jones’ sculptural works are based on propositions in alleviating anxiety. Predominantly working with sculptural objects of a basic shape, in varied scale so that objects can be manipulated by a participant to relate to the body, the participant has a role in activating the work.
Jones has predominantly created work where she is the sole performer, 'This is a [pro]test' involves a small group of performers who come from different backgrounds with various personal experiences which they will share with the audience. This work is being shared with visitors to the Yarra Ranges, asking them to consider what they care for in the world, the environment, each other, are there conditions attached to these considerations? Recycled content will be made available to visitors who find the performers by making their way through the Birdsland environment.
