Michael Stipe is best known as the lead singer of alternative rock band REM. Stipe met his fellow band members while attending college in Athens, Georgia.

Stipe uses his fame to advocate for causes he believes in, includes the Pro-Choice and Gun Control. He considers himself a Democratic Socialist and is a register Democrat so he can vote in Democrat Primaries. He has supported Bernie Sanders’ campaign for President.

In 1983, Stipe was in a relationship with fellow musician Natalie Merchant. He credits her for his own music becoming more political.

Then in 1992 rumors circulated that Stipe had contracted HIV. Stipe responded with:

“I think AIDS hysteria (extends to) anybody of indecipherable or unpronounced sexuality. Anybody who looks gaunt, for whatever reason. Anybody who is associated… as being queer-friendly.”

In 1994, Stipe said did not define himself as gay, straight or bisexual, but that he was attracted to, and had relationships with, both men and women. In 2001 he went further, describing himself as a "queer artist" and revealed that he had been in a relationship with "an amazing man" for three years.

In 1999, Stipe’s literary partner Douglas A. Martin wrote a a novel about “a six-year romantic relationship with the unnamed lead singer of a successful Athens, Georgia-based, rock band”. Martin later confirmed the story was about him and Stipe.

Stipe continues to perform and create art. He publish a books of his photography in 2018 and 2019.

Stipe lives with his long term partner Thomas Dozol who is also a photographer.
