In 1901, about 1,000 American teachers sailed to the Philippines aboard the USS Thomas, giving rise to the name Thomasites.
Sent by the U.S. military to build an English-based public school system, they established classrooms across the archipelago, forming the backbone of the country’s modern public education network.
