Even though he's been told it might kill him he still asks for a situation to use it
Even though he's been told he should return it, quote:

That small moment of "maybe I shouldn't" and then immediate grabbing it says a lot to me. He seems to want to use it.
There are several explanations you can come up with the text that's already there as to why this is
Maybe he thinks he'll remember things easier if he's using it. Maybe he thinks he needs it to save the people he cares about, like he tried with the Girl in White
Bottom line is, I have no idea. But what I think! Is that there's an untold story here. Something about this weapon is important to Seven, and I think there's more to it we haven't seen.
