Oropher was restless. The rain was lashing against the window of his study; the wind howling angrily, as if it were a wounded animal crying out into the darkness of the night.
And Thranduil hadn't returned home.
He clenched his fists, anxiousness washing over him as he listened to the fury of the storm. It had been Thranduil's first raid, first time going out to fight against the foul orcs that threatened their lands. He'd gone with experienced soldiers, had been excited and full of confidence. Nostariel had convinced him with a warm, comforting smile that he was ready, that Oropher should have more faith in him... and so he had let him go.
If something has happened to him, I'll never forgive myself...
He collapsed into a chair, leg jiggling as he tried to remain calm, closing his eyes as he fought the horrible images running through his head - Thranduil lying broken and bloody, Thranduil being tortured... being captured...
He jumped as the door creaked open behind him, turning his head with a start and blinking at the elf in the doorway, before letting out a relieved laugh and jumping to his feet.
"Ion-nin," he said softly, rushing over to him and pulling him into a tight embrace. "You're home."

"I did not think such things were important to you."
She tilted her to the side in curiosity as he spoke. “Why would you think that, your Majesty?”
(omg im done being a chicken) "You, there." Thranduil looked down from his mount, spotting the Gondorian armor. "I see that you have pledged yourself to the guard. I come to seek council with the steward."
Such a haughty greeting rankled the captain and he turned on his heel, face impassive.
"I have heard many tales of elvish eyesight and I am glad to see that they are mostly true. You are correct, my lord, I am indeed pledged to the guard and find myself captain of the loyal men who dutifully serve my father, the Steward."
A polite smile formed on his lips. "I will gladly escort you to him."
