    “Not always at your own expense, I hope...” she gently admonishes him as she applies an herbal salve to the worst part of his bruised back. 

    It terrifies her knowing that Riley would go to such lengths for her without any regard for his own safety. If she hadn’t frozen up the way she did, this probably wouldn’t have happened so she can’t help but shoulder the blame. It’s an absolute miracle — or a testament to the effectiveness of his aura training — that his injuries aren’t worse. 

    “I hate seeing you in pain like this, just for my sake. I should do a better job of protecting you instead.”

Riley’s pupils shrunk as he saw the incoming shadow ball aimed for Rosa.  Out of sheer instinct his body move in front of hers to take the attack for her. He didnt have time to deflect the attack or block it with his aura. The impact caused the clothes on his back to be torn open, his back would be heavily bruised.  Despite the pain Riley endured, he had to protect Rosa at all costs. Mustering the rest of his strength, he surrounded the gengar with his aura and sealed it away into the ground.

“Rosa… are you okay?  Are you hurt?”

    She should have done something.

    She should have run, dodged, even summoned one of her own pokémon to help, but she couldn’t. Terror had rooted her on the spot and prevented her from thinking rationally, from reacting the way a seasoned trainer should have when in the face of danger. She’d barely managed to brace herself for impact, but it never came.

    Riley — sweet, caring, reckless Riley — had jumped in front of her, taking the full-blown impact of the ghost-type attack.

    The hit brings the aura user down, but not before he manages to seal the offending pokémon away where it can do them no harm. He collapses onto her with a groan and she manages to snap out of her state of shock in time to catch him.

    “Riley, Riley! Oh my Arceus, why…?” she cries as she wobbles on her feet, holding him up as best she can. How can he be asking about her when HE’s the injured one? “Why would you do something as stupidly reckless as that?”
