The flowers they'd left the other day are still doing well. Arden isn't sure if any of the Myricks have been to the cemetery since the funeral– the wound is still quite fresh– so they make sure to stop by them first before going to see their father. Since it's only been a few days since their last visit, there's not really much cleaning up to do, just brushing away a bit of pollen and leaves.
She sits with her old friend for a while, planted cross-legged in the grass a few feet from her headstone, as if they're genuinely sitting together facing one another. Silence stretches between them– as it would forevermore– interrupted only by the chirping birds, the rustling of leaves in the breeze. “I miss you,” she says, finally, tears welling in her eyes. They realize that they haven't seen Efa with such frequency since high school, and try not to dwell on the thought, but that was one you couldn't really put back in the bottle.
And it all just reminds her of Jo, too, how their little trio is gone forever. She feels more alone these days than she maybe ever has. Aimless, too. Making her way over to her dad's grave, she wonders what he'd think if he could see her now. Giving up, coming home, only really staying sane by writing. They trace their fingers over the smooth granite, ghosting over the words carved into it. For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love. The vastness has been feeling pretty fucking unbearable if she's being honest.
Thinking the graveyard is empty, Arden, thoughts spiraling, lets herself cry.
