Breaking and entering was probably a no-no for an angel, but sometimes surprises demanded less than perfectly saintly behavior of those trying to plan them, not that Donato had ever held with being saintly just because he was divine. After all, his divinity was something gifted to him, something his but not by his request or even necessarily his workings, something he couldn’t rid himself of, because the means by which he could do so were the only things more painful than having it at all.
And so, breaking and entering was probably a no-no, but what else was he supposed to do when he was trying to surprise Adele? He supposed the more reasonable course of action would have been to let her know he was coming, but something in him couldn’t resist the charm of a surprise, or rather a surprise for Adele; who’d have thought he’d be able to find a reason to leave Italy, a reason to try and do something outside his guardianship and his little world and his love affair with the stars and his longing for Lucretzia after all this time?
By the time her key turned into the door, he’d sort of made himself at home, comfortable enough with the knowledge that he’d always be welcome because that was just how Adele was. As he waited, he found a book resting on a side-table and though he wasn’t entirely interested in the book’s premise, he’d taken to reading it all the same, shoes kicked off, in a comfortable sprawl on the couch. And so as the door swung open, he merely sat up slightly, head poking above couch as he leaned against the back of the couch lightly. Not meaning to startle her entirely, he waited until she at least looked like she was looking in his general direction before saying softly, “Surprise.”
