There was a smell to this place. There always had been, even before Rodolphus and his obsequious band of xenophobic fanatics started to take over. Maybe bureaucracy was just evil in and of itself, the stuff gunking up the grinding gears of progress, mindless of human causalities. It was a rotten kind of smell, but tonight, it was more acidic. It brought to mind snake venom and battery acid, and that thought alone almost made him laugh. Because everywhere he turned was another pureblood Slytherin alumnus, and for all that they said they weren't the house of evil, he had a hard time seeing them as anything else, given the state of things. And here he was in the middle of all of it, smiling and clapping people on the back, feeling like some part of him was slowly fracturing. His heart turned to glass, his stomach to porcelain, his liver to wood, all of it splintering and cutting him internally.
It would be a fucking miracle to just bleed out, and not have to worry about it anymore. That was the future though, he thought, catching the eye of Rodolphus across the room and tilting a glass in his direction, the smile on his face widening. But not until he could bring certain people down with him. Evan never thought he'd be the fatalistic type, but here he was, in this moment feeling like tossing his life away on a chance of taking one more fucker out of the world.
He would have done it too, but then he turned his head and caught Nellie's eye. For all that he didn't show it, still smiling and drinking and chumming around, something inside of him deflated, and he was able to push back the urge to do something drastic. He couldn't do that to her. Not now. He's smile brightened a little, into something more genuine and he grabbed a bottle of champagne and cross the room towards her. "Hey there, little sis," he said, filling her glass and then taking her arm. "Great fucking day, right?" he said and winked at her before finishing off his glass and taking a sip right off the bottle. "Wanna get some air?" he said, and didn't wait for an answer before pulling her away, out of the room and away from the people, his arm around his shoulder and putting on an act of being slightly more drunk than he actually was.
He didn't let it slip until they were safely closed up far enough away and then he sighed, leaning up hard against the door he'd just closed and locked and gave his sister a helpless smile. "We are so incredibly fucked," he said after a moment. “Every second I’m still in that room, I feel like I’m ten seconds away from leaping at his throat and throttling him to death.” He looked down and saw his hands were shaking and let out something of a laugh. “Fuck.”
