“so i didn’t know what you’d want to eat so i got options. and it was so not wallet friendly, but fuck it, we finally have some extra cash. so i got pizza, indian, and burgers. fuckin’ nuts they’re all in one plaza. i figure it’s dinner again tomorrow, right?” roarke is honestly amazed he managed to balance it all and make it up to the apartment. is it the nicest place? not by a long shot. but if you ask roarke, it’s the best. because it’s theirs.

“So, I know we’re not, like, those kind of people, but it is Christmas or close enough to it, so I got you this,” Roarke tells Lucas, tossing a small box to the other with a small smile. “It’s not anything that great, but it’s something, right?” he asks, waiting for him to open it.

roarke swallows. when’s the last time someone’s ever told him that or done something that implied that? probably not since his dad was alive, all those years ago. he wipes at his eyes and he’s successful, for now anyway, at keeping the tears away. “i-thank...” he trails off, not able to get the words out. “thank you. for telling me. for letting me know.”

roarke stills at the words, coffee cup halfway to his mouth. on some level, he thinks he might have known, but he’s convinced himself it was his own hope and not lucas’ feelings. he smiles and sets his cup down. “i think i’m falling in love with you, too,” he answers, leaning in to press a kiss to his lips.

“Yeah? You mean it? You’re not just gonna change your mind?” Roarke asks. He just needs to be sure, to hear it one more time. He wants a life with Lucas more than he’s probably wanted anything in his life, but he knows they can’t have one if they’re constantly on the run. if they’re ever going to have a chance to be happy, they need to find some place to call home. And that’s what Roarke wants. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be real.
