Being assigned the case wasn't the problem. Catarina was the problem. While others were a little more 'by the book' - like Catarina - Nate was more of a 'play it by ear' person. His belief was that rules were there as a suggestion, but to solve a case, Nate was going to do whatever it took. He was sure that exact mindset was why he was paired with Catarina.

"Great." Nate rose from the table, loosening his tie as he moved toward the door. "Not sure if creatures like you eat human food, but if you want to go to that diner, might want to get a move on. I won't wait all night." Keys to their rented Suburban jingled in his hand as Nate crossed through the door frame. He'd wait approximately sixty seconds. If she didn't show up, that's on her. But Nate really needed something in his stomach besides coffee and chips.

He waited in the car, staring at his watch to countdown the seconds.

Traveling back from a strenuous seventy-two hours on the job felt as if Nate hit the lottery. Their last case wasn’t easy and, for the life of him, Nate wondered why he was still in this line of work. It had all been to make his father proud. Now? He wasn’t sure what he got out of it.

Leaning back in the jet’s leather seat, Nate let out a sigh as calloused hands ran down his face. “Think they got any more Scotch in the back?”

"Coffee?" The agent entered the interview room, gently sitting the Styrofoam cup in front of them. Whether they'd take it or not, up to them. It was Nate's job to be polite.

There's a drippy faucet in the bathroom, just audible from where they're sitting. It counts away at the moments, eroding time.

The warehouse itself is dark and dingy, old machines covered in plastic sheets line the walls. Something that looks like mold crawls out of the cracks in the concrete floor.

"You remember what I said." It's not a question, it's a statement. "The deal goes down in five minutes. You give them the briefcase, you stay quiet. I'll handle the rest."

Calogero had only just been inducted into Leverage Consulting and Associates, and Nate wasn't willing to take off the training wheels yet. In fact, handing over the briefcase was the only thing he'd asked him to do thus far. He wanted to see how he'd handle himself in a tense situation, and it was about to get tense, Nate was certain.

     It had been a fun reason for going out - spending time with someone that they cared for was always something that Zora had enjoyed. And going out with Nate seemed to be as a good a reason to have fun as any. They had been looking forward to checking out the drive-in movie.

Had they been trying to find the right outfit for at least an hour or two before? Perhaps so. It was a drive-in.. Zora shouldn’t have worried so much. But they did like making a good impression on Nate, so.. there had to be effort. Even if it was going to come off as somewhat casual in the end anyway.

So when they had finally walked out to greet him, the kiss to the hand was enough to inspire a warmth in them. They smiled widely at him. “I didn’t realize that you could be so.. congenial. It’s certainly welcome,“ they manage to mutter quite likely, smoothly moving to return a kiss to his cheek before getting in the car.

It seems like it would be a very good night if this was anything to go by. Besides the gesture of a kiss on the hand was certainly a memorable move, something that they couldn’t help but replay regularly in the back of their mind.

“Well thank you, Mx Anderson.” He gave an easy chuckle and opened the door for them.

Nate had shown up in a cream colored blazer, and luckily, no matching trilby. Even so, he felt quite dashing. Dashing enough for sweeping romantic gestures like kisses on the hand. He smiled at Zora from the driver’s side of the car, for once sober enough to take his own car. 

“You look uhh...amazing.” Remembering himself for a moment, Nate looked bashful and used starting the car as an excuse to look away for a moment.

“I’m not a huge fan of modern cinema, but I hear this one is good.” Nate made small talk as he navigated the short drive out of the city, just far enough to where light pollution gave way to starry skies. 

“Look at that, Z.” He pointed out the window. “Maybe we should go star gazing later.” Nate had never had time for star gazing. He wasn’t even the type to “stop and smell the roses” but the thought of staring out into the cosmos with Zora made his heart feel light, even for just this moment.
