Thursday again: holiday edition

we are of course celebrating the famed 6July calendar in the Android Invasion :)

Sometimes you just decide to read a whole text about the proper ways and means of ratting, if you happen to live in Manchester in 1898. There's a lot of gore. And ferrets. And commas. And semicolons. I adore semicolons in a way that has not been fashionable for a solid century or so.

Visiting

Dumped the ancient iMac off at the Apple Store (I suppose somebody could have paid me for it had I put in the effort, but: effort.) Bought some cactus chocolates, bath bomb and avocado seaweed at the outdoor mall since I was there anyway.

My addiction to seaweed snacks is profound :)

Pat on the back if you guessed Fallen London. My alt has got into a fun but horribly expensive part of the ambition and struggles mightily. I have come near grinding out the necessary steel for the entire railroad and am now busily at work on SOTC.

Most implausible gameplay encountered this week: mushroom picking for fun and profit. I have never read a single nonfiction account of industrial-scale harvesting that makes this sound remotely plausible.

Writing

Broken the 20,000 word mark. I don't know how long it's going to be but it will be novel length before I'm through.

...partly because I got to play the new FL dating sim Mask of the Rose (nods at @girlfriendsofthegalaxy ) I would like to say I recommend it, but honestly I cannot. There's a reason why roguelike visual novels are not a Thing and this is it. I was able to play out two of the three storylines I wanted to do by dint of completely ignoring the plot, which is fine because I didn't care about the plot, but also: uh?

The third that I wanted was about getting to fuck Mr Pages. Given that this game was marketed on the basis of "tee hee, we will let you fuck the space bats in this one," I did not think I would require a wiki guide to fuck the space bat. It did not go well for reasons still unclear to me and I'm still huffy about that.

Also the soundtrack was the worst, which is why I went back to Maribeth.

Reading

A lot of stuff about Trump's legal woes, all of which are now out of date. Ha ha ha!

Visiting

Went up to the homeless encampment to give the first guy I saw my unneeded tent. Drove home and found that I'd handed over the pole bag and the tarp but not the tent on my bedroom floor. I'm an idiot.

Eating

...an alarming number of brown sugar pop tarts. you can tell I'm distracted, can't you?

Writing.

The goddamn original novel, for better or for worse, is in progress. Only took twenty years to get it together.

I am literally babbling. However, it is something to do while sucking cough drops in bed this weekend. (took test for Covid. Test negative.)

My Artisan of the Red Science is past 5 and counting, I need to do a hunt to increase my KT, ground out quite a lot of scrip and promptly blew it on the Jericho library. I think I'll enjoy Jericho when I actually have a moment to spare.

But the current priority is to get all my zee errands done- Tribute, Khanate crates, Docker Renown 40 item, and zee legs to get a cartographer's hoard so I can keep going with the railroad.

Eggs seem to have stopped being absurdly expensive, so I had some with rehydrated porcini and diced Swiss. Lovely combo. I may never use fresh mushroom again in a fryup- dried is so much less Icky and just as delicious.

I am trying not to go out during the day because it's like, 115 or something and records are being broken and such. Admittedly I wouldn't have realised that if the radio hadn't told me

The "old British musicians" roulette wheel is still on Madness. I don't think that Can't Touch Us Now is actually a good album, cos it's distinctly half baked, and yet the stray scraps of songs that are there are just profoundly catching. Very patchwork quilt, really.

Reading

If QC isn't letting us in for a Marten/Clare/slimegirl trio I will eat my cowboy hat.

(given the rate at which QC storylines move, it's not like anybody can call me on this in the next decade).

Drinking

Gaming

My ill-fated Fallen London alt has gone bankrupt trying to keep up with the monetary demands of Light Fingers. So it goes.

The main finally got to the Creditor storyline, which was groovy and well written and I would be feeling good about, if certain technical changes hadn't just made it incredibly annoying getting to Nightmares 7. I kicked the Manager's ass during Heart's Desire tho, so I'll write this off as him deliberately avoiding me. Ugh.

Writing

Novel word count clocking in around 25000 or so? I gotta consolidate versions at some point, but. effort.

Finally working seriously on original book. A thousand words a day until it's done.

I expect this part of the Thursday Post is about to get somewhat repetitive, the more so since I have apparently burnt out on fic. But hey: book!

Listening

Can't listen while writing. Therefore, not much listening.

So I told Itunes to give me a random from my collection, now I've finally got that set up again.

It turns out this is a rather tame version of the song. huh.

Playing

Whoever decided that Balmoral needed to be the seat of intelligence in the Neath is very droll. And enthusiastic. There's a lot more life and energy about this railway stop than...well, okay, Ealing is a contender, but Helicon House triggers my social anxiety. Balmoral allows you to craft intricate Great Game plots and also stomp around in moonlit woods looking at grouse, which is more or less my ideal of the perfect evil mastermind life.

(FL is not really the correct game for people who have no inclination for being an evil mastermind.)

Cooking

It turns out you can put too much cheese in a meatloaf. Mistakes were made.

because I'm transferring all the files off my faithful IMac that's been at my side for a decade before I flog its still functional corpse to the Apple store I have been listening to an extremely eclectic variety of music to make sure stuff transferred properly. This is one of the few Barry Manilow songs I can stand.

And it's very Vegas, so.

I would be inconsolable if there wasn't another one of these things in the works. For all the flak that I and other FNV stalwarts can chuck at the Commonwealth game, I have gotta admit it's hard to imagine anything this hilarious resulting from Arcade, Veronica and Cass running around. It delighted my soul, cleansed my pores, etc. etc. Good times.

Reading

Robert LaGuardia's biography of Montgomery Clift, which I've been meaning to get around to for absolute ages since he's sort of- sort of Clint Eastwood's alter ego? At least, that's the impression I had going in, and it was not dispelled.

The New Yorker, in a later and more civilised age, called the book "a pop Freudian scandal sheet". I'm not sure that's altogether fair; for a 70s text it's pretty even tempered about Clift's gayness but does look down its nose at him for being an addict who was a wreck way before the notorious accident.

I dunno. I have too much love of good craft myself not to look down on someone who seems to have kept making life harder for everybody he worked with in the movies.

Playing

Grinding Parabola this week to get all the goodies (mithridacy, monstrous anatomy, the three hundred mirror research I need for Artisan studies, a stupid number of Hillmovers and assorted birds).

I hate Parabola and will be glad to get back to London. Short entry.
