Tian Tsui (點翠):  “dipping of blue” The art of applying kingfisher feathers onto gold or gilt silver to produce intricate fine art objects and hair ornaments. It was extremely popular among aristocratic ladies during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The kingfisher was preferred over other birds because its feathers could retain its colour and luster for decades, even centuries. Source: Hermitage Museum & Gardens
