Doesn’t Ice Cream Make Everything Better?
//this was from a prompt I got forever ago from @pls-yaoi (I think) it was about tianshan helping each other from a panic attack but i completely changed it sorry lol idk how I feel about it but its been sitting on my laptop for too long so I'm posting it regardless. //
Hetian was sick of hearing the godforsaken voicemail sound for the fourth time but he needed to get in touch with Guanshan. It was nothing urgent but he passed by the redhead’s work that day and he wasn’t there. So obviously he went to the manager and asked if he had a shift and apparently Guanshan had called in sick, which didn’t make sense since he looked fine earlier. ‘Well how am I gonna get my beef stew now?’ Hetian thought, but deep inside him his worries went beyond food. He knew that Guanshan liked to ignore his calls but would always pick up eventually. For some reason Hetian just knew something was wrong but he didn’t know if he was supposed to do something about it. “Well he has no other friends of course I’m supposed to do something about it” he realized.
Meanwhile Mo Guanshan was laying on his back staring up at the ceiling wallowing in self pity. He had called in sick because he knew he would get scolded if he just didn’t show up but really he just couldn’t bring himself to get up. He refused to allow any tears flow but they were already welling up in his eyes. Nothing was particularly upsetting him but it was more like everything was upsetting him. It wasn’t fair that he had to work and also go to a stupid fucking school too. He let his thoughts wander for a bit gradually getting more negative until he decided to get up and busy himself trying not to think about how pathetic he was.
On his way up he tripped on his pants that lay in a lump by his bed and noticed that inside the pocket his phone was vibrating. Deciding it was unimportant and also not wanting anyone to hear the sadness in his voice he ignored it. After tidying up for a bit he was left with nothing to do and naturally he drifted towards the kitchen. Lucky for him, his mother was at work and could not pester him with questions so he got straight to work. His luck only lasted him so long because as soon as he put the stove on low to simmer, there was a knock at the door. Assuming that his mother had left her key, although that was unlikely, he tried to look like he wasn't crying and walked to the door.
When he looked through the peephole, he was not met with the lovely presence of his wonderful mother but something much, much worse. He had to keep from screaming because his plan was to pretend no one was home. That was until Hetian brought his face up to the peephole and said, “I know your home” with a sing-songy edge to his voice. “Come on, I just want to give you something and I’ll leave, I promise” he pleaded. “It is gonna get messed up and then you will have to pay me back,” Hetian continued to threaten.
Just as Hetian suspected, this broke Guanshan. “I don’t owe you anything!” the redhead shouted in return. “You won’t if you let me in,” Hetian retorted. With this, Guanshan slowly opened the door and glared at the figure in front of him. Said figure had a grin spreading across his face as he stepped in with an armful of grocery bags. “What do you want? I’m not in the mood for this,” Mo crossed his arms. “I didn’t know what flavor you liked so I brought all of them,” Hetian blatantly ignored guanshan and set out 10 different pints of ice cream on the living room table, varying from orange to rocky road. Without waiting for a response, Hetian headed towards the kitchen for some spoons and bowls as Guanshan looked in shock. He grabbed the redhead’s hand and sat him down on the sofa in the living room.
Suddenly Guanshan had a spoon in his hand and an array of flavors to choose from, Hetian watched him, silently urging him to get some of the sweet goodness. When a few seconds passed and Guanshan stayed silent Hetian gave up waiting, “Aren’t you gonna pick a flavor???” “Why should I?” the redhead retorted. There was no way he was sick and still this stubborn.
“I heard you called in sick from work.” Hetian changed the subject, remembering the reason he invaded the house in the first place. “How in the chicken dick did you find that out?” “Well I asked the manager of course” Guanshan gaped at the boy across from him then mumbled, “didn’t feel like going today.”
Eventually Guanshan did pick up a pint of ice cream probably to change the course of the conversation. For once, Hetian didn’t push it and also started looking through the ice cream. They started eating in silence with the occasional grumble from Guanshan about how he didn’t owe Hetian and how he was a dickhead. The usual retorts that Hetian was used to hearing but they sounded like they lacked energy compared to his redhead’s usual rage. Upon closer inspection he noticed that Guanshan’s eyes looked dry and tired as well. Before he could inspect further, Guanshan quickly stood up and made his way to the kitchen to tend to whatever was on the stove. He looked over his shoulder at Hetian, “are you ever gonna leave?” he said with less impatience than he probably wanted, almost like he genuinely wanted an answer.
“Depends, what’d you make?” he replied despite having no intention of leaving anytime soon. Guanshan pondered for a moment before saying, “I’m not sure, I just put something together without thinking.” Without waiting for a response Mo reached for two bowls from the shelf above him. “At least help me if you’re gonna be here you dick!” Guanshan shouted as he struggled to stir the pot and find spoons. His scowl had reappeared on his face and Hetian didn’t notice it was gone until he saw it again and realized he missed it. “Are you gonna get up or what?”. This finally got the latter to stand up from his comfortable spot on the couch “anything for you, brother Mo”. He grabbed the now full bowls of stew and took them to the table with Guanshan behind him. They ate together and Hetian almost didn’t believe his ears when he heard Guanshan whisper a thanks from across him.
