A heightened discovery
Jess and Rory stood on the narrow ledge, the wind tugging at their hair, the whole town of Stars Hollow stretched out dizzyingly far below them.
At first, Jess had seemed cocky as ever — cracking jokes, leading the way — but now, Rory could see the cracks forming. His hands were clenched around the old railing, his knuckles pale, his body stiff and frozen.
“You okay there, Mariano?” Rory teased lightly, stepping closer.
“I’m fine,” Jess muttered through gritted teeth, eyes locked straight ahead, refusing to look down.
She grinned, watching him squirm. “You sure? Because you’re gripping that railing like it’s the last cookie in the jar.”
He shot her a glare, but it lacked its usual bite. Rory’s grin only widened.
Just for fun, she gave him a playful poke in the side.
Jess flinched so hard he nearly jerked himself off balance. His shoulders hunched instantly, and for the first time, Rory heard a small, high-pitched giggle slip out before he clamped his mouth shut.
Her eyes widened in delight. Ohhh.
“You’re ticklish!” she said.
“No, I’m not,” Jess snapped, but the colour rising up his neck betrayed him completely.
“Liar.” Rory’s voice turned mischievous as she stepped even closer. “Jess Mariano, ticklish and scared of heights? This is a goldmine.”
“Rory, don’t even think about it,” he warned, but it was too late.
Grinning, she slipped her hand under the hem of his shirt and wriggled her fingers against his bare side.
Jess jolted violently, a strangled snort escaping him before he gritted his teeth, fighting to keep it together. His whole body trembled under her fingertips, his chest giving little involuntary shakes as he tried desperately not to laugh out loud.
“You’re not very convincing,” Rory teased, dancing her fingers lightly along his ribs.
Jess gave a breathless little whimper of a giggle, squeezing the railing tighter, his face flushing deeper with every second. His shoulders kept twitching, his mouth twitching too, like he was seconds from breaking.
“St-sto—” he tried to bark out, but it came out more like a choked laugh.
Rory giggled herself, amused by how hard he was fighting it. She tried a few quick scribbles against his side and up along his ribs, which made Jess squirm frantically, laughing under his breath, but somehow, somehow; he was still holding on.
“Man, you are stubborn,” Rory laughed, impressed. “Let’s see if you can survive this.”
Without warning, she snuck her hand higher, wedging it just under his arm, fingers fluttering mercilessly against the soft, hypersensitive spot there.
Jess absolutely lost it.
The second her fingers made contact, Jess let out a loud, helpless bark of laughter — no cool, no composure — and ripped his hands off the railing, twisting sideways to escape the unbearable sensation.
He nearly toppled into Rory, who caught him, both of them laughing now — Jess in breathless, red-faced humiliation, Rory in pure glee.
“Victory!” Rory declared, throwing her arms up dramatically as she steadied him.
Jess wheezed, still giggling under his breath, trying to recover. “You are evil,” he muttered hoarsely.
Rory beamed. “You love it.”
Jess gave her a look that was half-glare, half-smirk. “I hate you.”
“You’re smiling,” she pointed out smugly.
Jess rolled his eyes but didn’t deny it. His face was still bright red, and he kept casting quick, sheepish glances at her like he couldn’t believe she’d gotten him so good.
“You breathe a word of this to anyone and I swear—” he began.
“‘I’ll deny everything,’ yeah, yeah,” Rory finished with a grin, looping her arm through his as they started making their careful way down.
Jess shook his head, but there was no mistaking the fond, reluctant smile tugging at his mouth.
Jess clung to Rory’s arm.
They had only made it down a few steps when Rory, unable to resist, gave his side a quick, cheeky poke.
Jess jolted so hard he almost tripped over his own feet.
“Rory!” he hissed, barely managing to steady himself. His face was still bright red, and the way he clutched her arm even tighter made Rory snicker uncontrollably.
“Oops,” she said sweetly. “My hand slipped.”
Jess shot her a dark look, but it was hard to take him seriously with his cheeks still pink and his lips twitching like he was fighting a smile.
They descended a few more steps in tense silence — or, at least, Jess was tense. Rory was practically vibrating with mischievous energy.
And then, when Jess was focused on navigating a particularly tricky step, Rory struck again — slipping her fingers just barely under his shirt at his waist and giving a playful little wiggle.
Jess squeaked.
Actually squeaked.
The sound that escaped him was so utterly undignified that Rory almost had to sit down on the stairs from laughing. Jess clamped his mouth shut immediately afterward, glaring at her with wide, horrified eyes.
“You’re dead,” he muttered under his breath.
“Uh-huh,” Rory giggled, totally unrepentant. “You keep saying that, but here we are.”
Jess grumbled incoherently, trying to regain whatever shreds of dignity he had left, but Rory wasn’t done.
A few more steps down, she sneakily spidered her fingers along his side again, lighter this time, almost feather-soft.
Jess flinched violently, letting out a half-gasp, half-giggle, stumbling sideways into her. He had to stop and grab the railing again, breathing hard from trying to suppress the laughter bubbling up inside him.
“You’re seriously the worst,” he growled, though his voice was shaking with barely contained laughter.
“You love it,” Rory sing-songed again, giving him one final, playful poke in the ribs for good measure.
Jess groaned dramatically, dropping his forehead onto her shoulder in surrender. “Remind me why I ever thought climbing up here was a good idea?”
“Because you’re an overconfident idiot,” Rory said fondly, looping her arm through his once more. “And because deep down, you love a little chaos.”
Jess just shook his head, chuckling under his breath, and let her guide him the rest of the way down — no more pretending, no more walls, just the two of them laughing quietly together as they picked their way carefully back toward solid ground, a little closer than before.
