Learning how to Single Scull
I am so lucky.
I spent a week at Tideway Scullers School learning how to single scull under Tim Male (he represented GB at the 2004 Olympics in a four).
It was unreal. The weather was perfect, the water calm and the people amazing. On Monday morning they had me out in a single, which was a shock to say the least. Singling is nothing like being in a double or a quad, balance is key and capsizing is expected for novices. I was so scared of capsizing, I couldnt even go up and down the slide (use my legs), so I was arms only and consequentially waaaay behind everyone else! No probs though because I got loads of coaching and by the end of the week was able to go full slide and compete in a race!
Learning how to single scull has been a dream of mine for a while now. It was early 2012 when I saw single scullers at the Docks near University of East London as I was going for my morning run. It was then that I decided I had to do it! It took another 18 months for me to get onto a Learn 2 Row course, a sprained wrist prevented me from travelling to Florida at the end of 2013 to do a single sculling course and August 2014 here I am and I've finally started my path to singling! Gosh, it really has taken a while! Scullers Head here I come? LOL
