Who named them/Significance of their name:
Aslaug was named by her mother, to honor the god of the lost. Aslaug’s name means, roughly, “god-bride”. It’s seen as an omen of bad luck or a hard life among the Avvar, but Gunhild chose this name specifically as a way to commemorate the GOL; the name “Aslaug” calls to mind a kind of false hope (where she may be a god’s bride, but the likelihood of it is essentially impossible).
She grew up in Lurkerhold; provided for and taught, but she’s no stranger to hunger, or famine, or raids. So...normalized for her, brutal for someone who didn’t grow up similarly.
Relationship with parents:
She never knew her father; she heard he was a Grey Warden, but had never met him and no one really mentioned him. Being a single parent isn’t out of the ordinary so she never questioned where he was. Her mother was distant, to put it kindly. She prayed to the god of the lost to help her get a child, but she didn’t quite know what to do with Aslaug once she gave birth. Gunhild was more concerned with performing rites, and following the god of the lost, and going off into the wilderness and not returning for weeks.
Aslaug was in truth raised by Hrathgur and Loyalty. She was extremely close to Loyalty when she was small; she associated safety and happiness with being in Loyalty’s territory in the Fade. She’s always loved his face, he looks a bit like her where she never looked like her mother.
She was always close with Hrathgur and that connection cemented in her teens; she looked to him for guidance and comfort. He was, along with Loyalty, a father/paternal figure.
Three Words to describe them as a child:
A fucking handful. No? That doesn’t count?
Curious, chatty, fearless. The worst combo ever.
She wanted to know what that was, wouldn’t let you finish answering the question before she was asking another one, and tried climbing a cliff face on her own when she was four and alone.
Due to the circumstances of her mother, the god of the lost, and her birth, she wasn’t really ostracized, but she was avoided to a degree. She played with the other children, but she didn’t really have any friends.
Hold spirits, mostly. Loyalty.
A spin top that sang and whistled when it was spun, or a dwarven puzzle box.
A boy she had been playing with on the cliffs when she’d been about four or five, slipped and fell in a crevasse. He screamed the entire way down, and by the time she got an adult, his body wasn’t able to be recovered. It was difficult for Loyalty as well; terror and fear and despair demons were drawn to her after this time for a long while.
Tanning hides, making her own clothes, singing. Now, in DAI, she’s (reluctantly) made writing and reading her hobbies.
She feared falling after the boy she’d been playing with had died. She also feared the darkspawn since there had been incidences when they’d climbed over the gates, in the caves - they stole a young woman and no one found her. She was also afraid of being left alone or forgotten. She had a very, very difficult time letting go of Loyalty and vice versa when it was time.
She’s not afraid of falling anymore, but she still is afraid of being forgotten or left behind. Admittedly, her fear of that got worse the older she got.
Aslaug does recreational drugs, but only for ceremonies or religious rites.
She can’t handle sweet food.
She stares at the mark on her hand when she’s alone and traces it.
