combining one of my favorite disney songs with my favorite disney movie woah what’s happening here
Sarabi had noticed her son's anguish ever since the tragic event which took Mufasa. As her cub grew, he became more reserved. Broody. Reclusive. Aspects any growing teenager could inherit, of course — But Sarabi so scarcely saw the visions of her bright, bubbly boy she once knew.
"My son," She murmured as they walked together over the savannah, "You've hardly been eating lately."
"I'm not really hungry." Simba shrugged off.
Sarabi nodded to herself. Okay... She thought,
"Simba... All life on the planet must eventually reach its sunset. Sometimes, the cruelty of others brings the sunset closer than is comfortable, and it is no fault of-"
"Stop speaking in riddles, Mom," Simba snipped, clambering upon a fallen log to traverse its length as they walked. "Dad's gone. I know."
"But you fail to understand that it is not your fault," Sarabi's brows furrowed more sternly. "Your uncle's treachery cast a shadow on all of us. You cannot be blamed for that."
"I can," The young lion grumbled. "Even if the pride doesn't say it."
"You were a cub!" Sarabi exclaimed, her expression pleading. "On the cry of all the Great Queens of the Past, you were a child. No one blames you for what happened."
When Simba didn't reply, the mother softened into a more mournful demeanor, stopping in her tracks.
"...I blame myself." She admitted quietly.
Simba, too, paused. "What?" He asked, an ear twitching as he turned to look at his mother.
"I have blamed myself ever since that day, Simba!" Sarabi confessed. "Having Scar under my claws was not enough. I should have prevented this all before it could have occurred at all. A mother knows to keep eyes on her son. A queen knows to be careful of pride affairs. I knew what Scar was capable of... But I stayed quiet because I knew of the love Mufasa held for his brother."
Another bit of silence lapsed between them. Simba slowly sat down.
"We all wish to blame ourselves for the things we cannot change," Sarabi acknowledged, looking into the darkening skies of dusk. "But regardless of how I feel... It is not my fault. It is not your fault. It is not Mufasa's fault. The blame is solely on Scar. And history will remember this... But they are both gone now, and a new dawn will rise in the East. I will be there, and when it is my time to set, I will. But my paws will be here to guide you on your path."

An AU I write with @blues-hub-blog! Simba turns back to the pride instead of running away, and Sarabi kills Scar when she hears of what he did. She leads the Pridelands, teaching Simba of how to lead.
