Excuse my ignorance, what is the lesbian masterdoc?
god i wish i was you. So this was around 2018, peak ace discourse, but right before the porn ban to give you an idea of tumblrs overall maturity/popularity. A (THEN) lesbian wrote a long "how to know if im a lesbian" google doc based on, and I can not stress this enough, entirely her own experiences.
And I swear to god sapphic tumblr passed it around with the grave seriousness of stone butch blues (and to give the author a little bit of grace, i know that wasnt really her intention at first). This got spread to every discord circle with any afab person having a sexuality/gender crisis. Online sapphics loved it so much that recently i heard a friend of mine who is 29 years old had sent it to their friend going through a breakup. In 2025.
you can read a preserved copy here on internet archive and ofc you are welcome to form your own opinion. But it leaves no room to explore anything else other than specifically cisgender lesbianism because that is the perspective it speaks from.
Any chance at bisexuality is explained away by "compulsory heterosexuality". Which i absolutely believe is real. but just. Read this passage in particular and keep in mind that the author later came out as bisexual and engaged to a cisgender man.
This shit was gospel to me for some reason, despite knowing i was bisexual since i was 13. Despite being 16 crying for weeks in HS over boys not loving me back the way i was in love with them. Despite my first relationship at 14 being with a person who (idk what they ID as these days) was very insistent they werent just a girl.
I feel like the popularity of this gave me the stupidest excuse to hide ever. "Deny all male attraction, because you can still be cis if you spin around and say 'comphet' three times in the mirror."
Idk, I dont understand claiming to be a well read lesbian, writing 30 pages of unsourced nothingburger, and not for even a second consider how important it is to consider your own personal gender as a facet of the sexuality crisis youre having.
The literal only time trans women are brought up is to say "maybe youre a lesbian if men you date come out later as trans women". Like ok, way to make trans women coming out about yourself? I dont think any cis men that liked me when i was cis are secretly gay men.
I would say this half assed "Gender Feelings" bit that literally takes up not even an entire page fucked with me the most.
Because it got me in a mindset of "oh im violently upset when men see me as a women because i think theyre seeing me as just some object." But guess what i learned? CIS STRAIGHT WOMEN ALSO FEEL GROSS AROUND MEN. it's called being affected by misogyny. and it isnt because of your sexuality that you feel awful, it's because being seen as an object just SUCKS.
It wasnt until i was in a long term relationship with a woman that i realized i absolutely hated being called a girlfriend or 'wifey' by her too! like oh! because i was not a girl! It felt wrong and grating and disgusting, even though I loved her. And that was really difficult to unpack.
and for fucks sake its "credits" is literally a list of their friends tumblr blogs. not even specific posts? Just the fucking blogs? Like master doc more like an organized collection of someones scattered and complicated personal thoughts after taking an "am i gay?" quiz, rephrased so that anybody can apply it to themselves.
essentially, it was a very very bizarre phenomenon on sapphic tumblr. and the authors engaged to a cis man, and probably jokes about her lesbian phase. read some real queer literature with like. sources and shit.
