The last 2024 release I’ll be reading before jumping back through the decades to put some old school reading orders together… and it was good to end on a high!
THE UNACCOMPANIED by Toby Beall is a wondrous anthology collection - some single pages, some longer - of thought-provoking tales. Following the beautifully painted shorts, this 64 page book culminates with a longer story called ‘The Knight and the Gardener’ which explores humanity through its two protagonists, contrasting the previous pages with pencil and inks, but the shift in tone compliments the story perfectly. What really stands out about allowing the reader to piece the unspoken elements of the story together themselves.
And that’s the real strength of The Unaccompanied. In contrast to so much modern media, Toby leaves it to the reader to reader to fill in the blanks themselves, making the book far more engaging. What a great way to end the year!
