jared and abby first met at alec's funeral. alec was jared's cousin who grew up in la and moved to new york city after graduating high school; he was also abby's fiance. alec recently passed away and now abby is in town for the funeral celebration of life party, and to get everything taken care of with alec's family before she goes back home to new york.
first impressions: abby thinks jared is irresponsible and inconsiderate because he was a bit late to the funeral and flirting with the hostess at the luncheon after the funeral- think fritz from 'catch and release'. jared thinks abby is a major control freak who doesn't even care about alec's family (why else would this be the first time she's meeting everyone aside from alec's parents?) and is more or less an ice queen bitch who drinks far too much booze.
the two really don't have any reason to see each other again outside of the upcoming party; and let's face it: they don't want to. things were tense the first time around (which we can plot in more detail) and they both just want everything to be done and over with. but plot twist: they have no choice but to see each other.
with abby knowing she'll be in town for about another month, she picked up a gig: continuing the remodeling of the fire station that jared works at. so, the two are forced to see each other there and also through family get togethers as alec's cousins, aunt, uncle, and parents, are trying to support abby as much as she allows.
everything is super open. you might suspect the plot is loosely based off of catch and release and that's a fair and correct suspicion. i'm just here for the angst, wrong first impressions, and working through trauma. because abby really is a hot mess and jared is too stubborn and get invested in people. he won't be able to turn away from her. i really can't wait to see where things go <3
