Tom Bogaert, Prestige, 2013, 3rd Ghetto Biennale, Port-au-Prince
For the 3rd Ghetto Biennale in Port-au-Prince in December 2013, Tom Bogaert invited Haitians to warp the ‘Prestige’ beer label and comment on the narrative behind it. In a mini survey, the artist asked about Haitian identity and possible ways of linking the results to a beer label.
Before dedicating his life to art, Belgian artist Tom Bogaert documented genocide and human rights abuses in Africa, Europe and Asia. He worked as a lawyer for Amnesty International and the UN refugee agency. The artist does not see his artwork as an extension of his refugee work, although it does directly confront the intersection of human rights, entertainment and propaganda.
Tom Bogaert stopped practicing law in 2004 and participated in the Elizabeth Foundation Studio Center in New York City. He had his first solo exhibition in NYC in 2008 with Jack the Pelican Presents gallery he has exhibited work in Europe, the Middle East and the US.
In January 2010, Bogaert began working on ‘Impression, proche orient' (IPO), an art project referencing issues relevant to the contemporary Near East society including politics, artistic identity and the new Arabs. His recent solo exhibition And Did Those Feet at Al Hoash Gallery in East Jerusalem included works from IPO in Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and Syria.

Background: Minecraft Mausoleum is an online video game version of 'mausoleum for a president'. Syrian president Bashar Al Assad is known to be a computer geek. He used to be head of the 'Syrian Computer Society' and opened up his country to the internet at the beginning of the millennium. In the face of the Arab Spring's general enthusiasm for online tools, Minecraft Mausoleum utilises Minecraft - an online building game - as context and medium to present a model of a Mausoleum for Al Assad.
