"Will You Be Mine" by Tom Rasmussen ft. TAAHLIAH

Remixing a short interlude from Tom Rasmussen's last album, TAALIAH stretches and pulls the original vocals in all directions. This "Will You Be Mine" reminds me of Dawn Richard's work with Machinedrum over a decade ago - the way the pair would take a single phrase and tumble it until it was polished brightly, loop it until it seemed infinite, until it became detached from and eventually regained meaning. TAALIAH takes the titular refrain smoothly from an intimate, quavering beginning into the depths of a smoky underground neon club before emerging from a stairwell back out into the sharp cold night. "Will You Be Mine" becomes a quest, a journey that encapsulates the depths contained in even this simplest of pleas.

The religious overtones of the sample, originally titled “Psalm II: Will You Be Mine?” read theatrical and arch, as though composed for a modern ballet production or an off Broadway musical. There’s a seriousness to the interlude that TAAHLIAH preserves even as she transforms the song for the dancefloor. In her hands it’s dirty and distorted, glitching and voguing under strobing lights. TAAHLIAH’s work always has a very sophisticated Lisa Frank vibe to me – soaring, colorful, intricate but not in a way that defies comprehension – and that quality is on full display here. The feeling she conjures in her remix is the sort of thing you want to cover your walls with, an instant mood improvement.

During my week off, I went to see Scissor Sisters perform, supported by Tom Rasmussen. It was a fantastic and fun show from start to finish, and we left danced out and sweating. While there, I bought this copy of Body Building by Tom Rasmussen that I'm playing now. Tom was at the merch stand, and they signed my copy (my name is hidden in the above image) and were just generally lovely to chat to. If you're a fan of Scissor Sisters, you might like this too - give the song Look At Me a listen.

Tom Rasmussen - Body Building

talk about a pride album! Body Building is an album that, from beginning to end, just EXUDES queer power, empowerment, and inspiration. it's such an uplifting album full of great dance songs and just oozing with 90's disco/club nostalgia. it's a super fun listen, and one i can't recommend more.
