Summary: "As kids, Mark and his cousin Talia spent many happy summers together at the family cottage in Ontario, but a fight between their parents put an end to the annual event. Living on opposite coasts -- Mark in Halifax and Talia in Victoria -- they haven't seen each other in years. When their grandfather dies unexpectedly, Mark and Talia find themselves reunited at the cottage once again, cleaning it out while the family decides what to do with it. Mark and Talia are both queer, but they soon realize that's about all they have in common, other than the fact that they'd both prefer to be in Toronto. Talia is desperate to see her high school sweetheart Erin, who's barely been in touch since leaving to spend the summer working at a coffee shop in the Gay Village. Mark, on the other hand, is just looking for some fun, and Toronto Pride seems like the perfect place to find it. When a series of complications throws everything up in the air, Mark and Talia -- with Mark's little sister Paige in tow -- decide to hit the road for Toronto. My home internet died again shortly after my last post about getting it back again, so if my activity on here has seemed spotty, that’s why. But I’m with a new service provider and pretty confident it’s not going to die on me again! So:

What have you all been reading? What have I missed? Do you have any fall or Halloween plans? A spooky TBR? Tell me everything!

Personally, right now I’m reading Yume by Sifton Tracey Anipare which I picked up because of how my store’s book buyer pitched it. She was almost completely wrong about what it is, but it’s still pretty great, and it’s going to be  near the top of my October wrap-up if it’s not the very highest. Basically, it blends the story of a Black Canadian woman teaching English in Japan and struggling with xenophobia and culture clashes, and the story of power struggles within the world of the yokai (which gives me major Ghibli vibes). I can’t say how they connect because that’ll spoil things.

I’m also reading We Will Not Cancel Us by adrienne maree brown, which should be required reading for anyone using social media for social justice, and When You Get the Chance by Tom Ryan and Robin Stevenson, which is about two queer teens trying to get to Toronto Pride while dealing with family issues. It’s all right, but less road-trippy than I was expecting, and I’m mostly reading it to find out how one character gets his act together.

This month you’ve got plans to set upon and you’ve got the passion to motivate yourself to keep going. Read something with a character who must learn to look around and allow other options.

Gemini: This is a big energy month for you. You’ve got a good idea of what you want and what you don’t and you’re not afraid to say no. Your free thinking mind sends you down adventurous paths as you let yourself get philosophical and daydreamy. The only problem in your way is difficulty making yourself take action. This month read a story about someone feeling uncertain and/or unsatisfied and throwing that off for something better.

Cancer: The full moon in Leo fills your with strength this month. You’ve got courage, Cancer, and a grounded energy keeping you working. January finds you prepared and getting organized as things come to their end and other things begin to take shape. Lean into those feelings with a book about putting plans into action.

Leo: The sun in Aquarius has you thinking differently and in a more independent state. You’re confident in letting things go as they will, confident in your planning, and ready to explore and make new, adventurous choices. You’re unabashedly willing to change your opinions and try out new perspectives, but you may also be having some issues with your own self esteem otherwise. Virgo This month is all about creativity and free thinking. In times of uncertainty now you need to look closer, make your decisions and plans, and push yourself to act once you feel prepared. Follow your brain’s interests and curiosities, and most of all follow what you want. You may find yourself on some kind of adventure! Pick up a book where someone has to look seriously at what they’re choosing to follow or believe, and give serious thought to what’s best.

Libra: January has you feeling motivated and organized. That makes it easier for you to move forward- but part of that is also going to come from deciding what you want and what you need to let go of- without throwing yourself off or getting dragged out of the action. As you roll with the punches, prepare for some good vibes and confidence! Read something about jumping in unprepared and trying to find your footing.

Scorpio: This month has you feeling confident with the changes in front of you. You’ve always been able to figure out what you want, but you’ve got the extra push to go for it right now. Bask in that self love and love for others, and be confident in knowing what you should act on and what you should release. This month go for a cozier read, full of love and creativity.

Sagittarius: January finds you with big ideas and a strong idea of what you want. Though while your goals may be strong, you’re not going to feel that motivated to do much about them. Uncertainty may shake you, and you’ll be having some problems pushing yourself to take action. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, so don’t go nuts over it! Try a story of misplaced goals or hopelessness and learning not to smother what you have by pushing it too hard.

Capricorn: You’re a good planner and ambitious, and January is going to make you feel that even stronger. You may have some trouble committing to a goal, but once you do this month finds you taking plenty of action and making positive changes. Read a book about someone pushing forward without seeing other options, and learning about all the possibilities out there.

Pisces: This month has you feeling really positively towards others. January is social for you, Pisces, and has you willing to be flexible. Lean into the temptation to change your mind or try out new ideas and perspectives. Read a story of charity and gratitude, and learning what to accept and what not to.

Quick Review: When You Get the Chance by Tom Ryan & Robin Stevenson Rating: 3/5

A wonderful YA novel where cousins Mark and Talia are each trying to get away from family obligations to be part of Toronto Pride. I loved the focus on familial relationships and the explorations of how even though the bonds between cousins and siblings are forever, they still require effort for the relationships to be maintained. And I loved reading about Canada! I don't think I've ever read a YA set there before so it was very interesting to learn a bit about the country. The perfect read for Pride next month but not quite the wild summer contemporary I was looking for.
