Aperture recently published a monograph of the late Tom Sandberg’s work Tom Sandberg: Photographs . What I really love about his work is that he causes the viewer to pause and contemplate the image, which in the age of social media and smartphones, most viewers do not. We have access to thousands of photos every day, scrolling endlessly, pausing to give a heart or make a comment on the ones that catch our eye, and then moving on. Sandberg’s photo I posted above, somewhat captures that hurried feeling. A man quickly striding along a beach, cigarette in hand, glancing over his shoulder at the vast ocean, while a jet races by above.
