Michigan States Annual #SweetSixteenSunday Recap

Eighteen consecutive NCAA Tournament births capped by making it out of the weekend 13 times and with only one loss after winning the opener. Damn fucking right I’m putting Annual in that title. At this point nothing is more of an American tradition than watching Tom Izzo increase the play of mediocre/average players in March. 

Worst free throw shooting team in the tournament somehow sinks them all when it counts to pretty much dominate the ACC Champs Virginia. It really wasnt even close. Of course I was nervous at times because as we all know B1G teams never pull away but for the most part Virginia was completely out coached. The MSU coaching staff came up with an entire new defensive game plan from last year (MSU ended Virginias season last year as well) and got their players to buy into it in under 48 hours. 

Mid-Decmeber I tuned out this team because I thought they were too small and didnt have the discipline to make a run. Costello and Gavin Schilling are listed at 6′9 but are by no means larger than 6′6 yet are out there battling for boards and making key buckets. Forbes has stepped it up while Valentine has stayed consistently good with not too many “DENZEL WHAT ARE YOU DOING” moments to keep us in this thing.

But really, all credit should go to Senior Guard Travis Trice. The guy almost died 2.5 years ago from a mystery illness and has now become an absolute flame thrower as the 2 guard. Setting the tone early with 13 of the Spartans first 15 and coming through clutch in the second half with an INSANE three pointer with the shot clock winding down to put MSU up 8 with 2:50 left. Wasnt my favorite play call of all time but those baskets have to go in to win big games and thats just what Michigan State and Tom Izzo do. Lets see how far we can go...
