for the first actual post on this blog, i think i'm going to talk about how some of the actors' experience (or lackthereof) added to their characters! this is all coming from my memory of Making Dazed (2005) as well as my own interpretation of the movie/characters. feel free to add to the post or send an ask or message me any thoughts you have about this! i could probably talk about dazed forever (hence why i made this blog!)

so starting with tony. anthony rapp was one of the only actors they cast that had any solid acting experience before Dazed*(sidenote about this under the cut). he came to set with his lines memorized, and it Shows. there were some times i found it a tad distracting, but that was mostly because i pick up on mannerisms really easily and i'm pretty familiar with rent (which, iirc, was pretty recent after dazed, so it makes sense there were similarities in both of his character's speech patterns).

anyway, i think it totally makes sense for tony as a character. he's one of the "intellectuals," he's a little awkward, he isn't comfortable at parties, and he speaks more eloquently/uses less slang than most of the other characters. it makes perfect sense that tony would speak as if he was reading from a script/had his lines memorized. i could totally picture tony like standing in front of a mirror and practicing what to say, you know?

then, there's mitch. absolutely no shade intended, love wiley wiggins, but the Nose Pinch. i gotta bring up the nose pinch (later) but looking at it purely from a casting stand-point, it makes so much sense to cast an actor with little-to-no experience as mitch. not only because they were already casting lesser-known actors from Austin , but because mitch is SUPPOSED to be awkward.

mitch is the epitome of the nervous up-coming freshman that just wants to fit in and look cool. throughout the movie, we see how mitch acts around older people he wants to impress, but not so much how he acts when he's alone. he's just absolutely fumbling his way through the night and it's funny, but it's also so earnest and it's honestly one of my favorite parts of the movie. (the "like how?" scene, i mean come ON) but seriously.

there are plenty lines that back up mitch's awkwardness, but the Acting ChoicesTM are also so fitting. as anyone who's paid any attention to mitch during Dazed knows, he has a habit of grabbing his nose. like SO. MUCH. and i see it talked about a lot in a negative way and, like. listen. is it award-winning acting? not really. but AGAIN. it's so earnest and endearing and in character!!

the big times i remember mitch pinching his nose are actually not directly in front of any of the high schoolers, but mostly when he's with his friends his age. at the baseball field with carl, at the emporium with sabrina, and at the beer bust with julie. what i got from all these moments is that mitch doesn't only try to play it cool in front of pink and everybody, but also in front of his peers. (i could definitely explore that in a different post, but not tonight)

at the baseball field, the football players are watching from the stands, but i don't think mitch was over-acting for them, specifically. he actually tries to act cool in front of carl later, when he buys the six pack for melvin and acts all nonchalant when carl asks him what he's got in the bag. so we know that mitch tries to act cooler than he probably is, regardless of who he's around. very relatable, tbh, ESPECIALLY because he's not even in 9th grade yet LMAO

i would say mitch also wants to act cool in front of sabrina, especially because he's still at the emporium and pink is right behind him. iirc, the nose pinch happens when sabrina tells him hirschfelder got busted, so it's possible that that was his genuine reaction, but also is it really that surprising? he could very well be playing into the hazing, because he knows that if he plays it right, he can get in with the cool crowd like pink.

and he DEFINTELY wants to act cool in front of julie. his lines totally support this, but again i think wiley wiggins' mannerisms (mitch-isms, if you will-) come across with julie, too.

whether or not the nose pinch was intentional or a habit or whatever is obvious up to interpretation. but i guess all this is to say that you can pry wiley wiggins' nose pinch and anthony rapp's perfectly delivered lines out of my cold dead hands.

there's a couple additional thoughts/facts about casting under the cut if you're interested! thanks for reading and, again, please lmk of any thoughts you have! :)

*I've heard (from various sources) that one of the reasons they didn't cast well-known actors at the time, because they spent a good portion (I think like 1mil/6 million?) of the budget on the soundtrack alone. I've also heard McConaughey say it was because there was a lull in coming-of-age movies and so there weren't as many well-known teen actors at the time! I'm pretty sure he talks about that in the doc I linked at the top of the post, but lmk if I'm wrong!

I really like this choice, especially as someone who grew up during the MCU when actors started getting cast just because of their name. that's happened forever and ever and definitely didn't start with the MCU, but it's still super refreshing to have a cast comprised of (at the time) small actors that were devoted to the film and not the fame.

it just adds to the authenticity and makes it so easy to disappear into the snapshot of time that dazed captures. i won't ramble on for too much longer and there are already youtube videos that say pretty much the same thing, but i just feel like Dazed shows its characters through a window and we can only see the parts in front of the window, but if we look hard enough we can see a little bit more. but i just work here.

- tony had been your friend all through high school so far

- the two of you had been in a couple classes together and you were well acquainted with his friend group too

- you and cynthia had even had girls nights together so you were pretty in there with his friends

- outside of school, you surprisingly spent a lot of time with tony as well

- mostly studying but also at parties and poker nights

- at parties the two of you would usually huddle together, drink a few beers and just chat for the duration

- nothing major

- you usually just preferred to enjoy watching everyone else get shit faced and laugh at their mishaps

- and cringe at cynthia and wooderson

- but the two of you stayed solid friends as you got into the swing of senior year

- you liked tony a lot, he was so sweet and caring and great to talk to

- he was always supportive no matter what and he could give great advice when you needed it

- you always joked with your friends that tony was the ultimate boyfriend material

- but they seemed to take it more seriously and thought you actually liked him like that

- you’d just reply with “nah, he’s my best friend, wouldn’t it be weird if we dated?”

- to which they’d reply: “it might be weird but it would definitely be cute!”

- you’d laugh and shake your head at them

- meanwhile, tony had always toyed with the idea of asking you out

- I mean, the two of you were best friends and you were close as close can be, what could go wrong?

- but he had put it off so many times in a bid to not ruin your friendship

- because that really would suck and he did not wanna lose a best friend because of some silly feelings he had

- he kept the thought in the back of his mind though, in case he felt you wanted a relationship too

- one saturday, the two of you organised to study for the afternoon then call for a pizza

- you showed up at his house, books in hand and a bag of candy too

- you guys decided it would be best to study upstairs, that way you’d be less distracted

- the sun shone in through the window and you lay on the floor together, taking turns to ask questions from the textbook laid between you

- tony couldn’t help but notice how the sun reflected off of your silky hair and made your face glow warmly

- he could feel himself blush a little the next time you asked him a question

- you noticed his cheeks go rosy when you smiled expectantly, waiting for him to answer

- he looked so cute sprawled out comfortably on the floor, glasses crooked and hair pushed back so he could see properly

- you felt your cheeks heat up a little too

- “uhh, is the answer... ribosomes?” (best random answer i could come up with heheh)

- “yup!” you replied

- “yay!” he grinned back at you and did a sort of victory dance, making you giggle

- “did I ever tell you you have a really nice laugh?” tony blurted, face going red again

- “no... but thank you, that’s sweet. did I ever tell you you’re really good at biology?” you said, smiling at your lap

- “I’m not that good... but thank you, y/n.”

- despite the awkward silence that ensued, you couldn’t help but feel drawn to tony in that moment

- at the same time, tony grabbed your hand

- “hey, y/n, I know this is gonna sound a little weird but... we’ve been really close friends for a while now and I can’t help thinking we could be more than that. you don’t have to say yes, not at all! but it was just a thought, y’know? since we know each other so well and...”

- “hey, its okay, tony! I’d like that a lot” you grinned at him and squeezed his hand, then pulled him in for a tight hug

- he wrapped his arms around your shoulders and pulled you on top of him so you could lay cuddled up together for a bit

- “I’m glad you said yes because that was total word vomit!”

- so tony is a total sweetheart and cutie and baby at the best of times

- but whenever you’re sad he gets even cuter

- first things first he’ll ask if you wanna talk about it

- arm around your shoulder rubbing it gently or engulfing you in a comforting embrace

- “do you maybe wanna tell me about it? I might be able to help you, gorgeous”

- if you say yes he’ll listen so attentively, every detail counts so he can think of something fitting to make you feel better

- if not, that’s alright, he’ll still try and think of something, perhaps you’ll want to talk when you feel better

- he’s good at remembering what you like/love, so that’ll be his first thought

- whether it be your favourite food, video, thing to do together, etc, he’ll consider it

- he’d even smoke a joint with you if you really wanted

- “if it makes you feel better then sure”

- he’ll get takeout and you’ll sit and enjoy it together in front of the tv or whatever

- or he’ll get cynthia to drive you to the drive in burger joint

- he’ll know you’re really sad and need some extra love if you don’t even want any of that stuff

- that’s when he’ll just hold you tight and cuddle for as long as possible

- he’ll quite literally cuddle the sadness out of you

- forehead kisses are a definite occurrence here plus hand holding, hair stroking and knee rubbing

- lots of ‘I love you’s and ‘its okay’s and ‘I’m here’s

- if it takes a whole night of being together he’ll do it

- anything to make his angel happy again

- tony is also really good at giving advice

- when you have something bugging you that’s getting you down, he’ll give you insight or advice to help you feel better about it

- he’ll comfort you and try and motivate you to fix whatever’s gone wrong

- he just wants you to go back to your normal happy self and he will try anything and everything to make it happen
