FUCKING HELL MAN
this scene ..... like cocaine. to me
okay get his ass
i dont think i mentioned this but i had this crazy ass dream that was formatted as a batman 66 episode with the title card credits and all...it even ended on a cliffhanger with the 'same bat-time, same bat-channel' narration. for some reason in order to prevent their secret identities being leaked to gordon, bruce and dick had to pretend to be in a relationship. there was one snippet of dialogue that went:
Dick: Gee, Bruce! What's with the schtick! Why'd you let Commissioner Gordon think we were going steady?
Bruce: It's all part of the plan, old chum. You see, with the Batmobile tracked to the outer yard of Wayne Manor, I had to come up with some explanation as to why Batman would visit Bruce Wayne! What better reason than to congratulate Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson on their pending nuptials!
okay bear with me for a minute. i am sick in bed and possibly delusional. currently finishing up iss. 4 of nightwing/huntress (1998) and a big theme through this whole miniseries has been trust, or lack there of.
here we have a panel where helena complains about dick's refusal to use the batmobile--more pointedly, his refusal to let her into the batcave. dick says, "hardly anyone's allowed to see the batcave".
then she tells him to refer to her as helena. dick refuses with the reasoning of not wanting to make it a habit, and as the reader we immediately surmise this is because he doesn't want to call her by her real name out on the field and jeopardize her identity. but helena doesn't take it that way.
helena makes the point that dick's loyalty to bruce is preventing his partnership with her go anywhere. he won't give her what she wants--to be included in the fold as he is, as babs is. she wants that community that she has lost with the death of her family.
helena is seeing dick's refusal as a refusal of her partnership. of her trust. she is willingly giving up her name like an olive branch to connect with him and the other bats. but dick's loyalty to the others (but more significantly bruce) is trumping her ability to make those connections.
the reason I bring all this up is that the very next page transitions back to the frankie black plot with frankie's boss malfatti condescendingly asking him why he didn't trust him--someone who is in the same profession as him, someone supposedly cut from the same cloth--with the identity of the civilian woman he loved.
malfatti says, "do you know why [...] [he] hid you from me? It's 'cause he really loves you, I'm thinkin'. And see, he knows I can use you to control him."
this talk of trust back to back is a clear tie and I think helena really did hit the head on the nail of why dick is refusing to bring her to the batcave. he still defers to bruce as the lead between them, the final decision even though dick claims he wants to be bruce's partner and to be on equal ground. while this might not always happen, the fact that this is getting in between dick and helena is enough to show even a casual observer how important bruce is to dick--and thus how much of a weak spot he would be for nightwing if batman was somehow compromised.
totally normal to wake up in a sweat after dreaming your brother/mentor/bestfriend/etc catches you with the vigilante that you admitted reminds you of him . normal...
