twenty one pilots | 11/02/16 smartphone lights during Brys performance
It is time ....
Tonight I’m going to see twenty one pilots ... again.
I’m kinda excited because I know this concert’s gonna be great but I’m not too keen on spending the evening getting into fights with children who are way too aggressive for their age.
Gotta love Berlin people.
Either way, I’m planning on recording ten songs (that’s so.. much... considering I probably have to be in the pit. Let’s see how that goes) and I hope my picture will look better tonight, lol.
Stay tune for Blurryface and the pilots .. who care what you think but don’t care about your health or the fact that most of their fandom doesn’t have money. (Okay, the health thing is about a group of people who’s been camping in front of the venue since last night and it’s been raining all week in Berlin and I am bitter. Okay? Just bitter.)
twenty one pilots.
Here it was, my first twenty one pilots concerts.
I actually had tickets for their first concert in Hamburg, back in November, but we all know the German leg of the last Blurryface tour got cancelled. Well, now their second concert in Germany was the perfect ending of my 21st year of life.
I got to Astra Kulturhalle rather later due to me having to work but fear not! It won't mean the end of the world (considering I had to leave early and miss Trees I actually found it better to avoid going to the front) but it DID mean me not being able to see much. I'm rather tiny, I can't help it.
Of course, I had done my research before going to the concert, so I knew which songs they would play. Or so I thought.
twenty one pilots switched things up a bit:
They began the evening with heavydirtysoul, a song I was looking forward to and obviously a crowd pleaser. Same with Stressed Out (I really felt the energy of the crowd when everyone scream AND NOW I'M STRESSED OUT. And, I'm not gonna lie, it made me feel old because I was surrounded by a sea of teenagers who went through stuff that made them relate to those depressing lyrics twenty one pilots are known for. What is happening to our youth?), Guns for Hands, Migraine and Polarize.
The first surprise of the show was definitely when they started to play House of Gold - Wait a second, weren't they supposed to play We Don't Believe What's On TV? They did, eventually! It was a nice change and the two songs fit together perfectly (my heart might have melted, but shhh, don't tell anyone.) The Judge and Lane Boy were next with the crowd going down (or well, staying low) during LB. Since this was my first twenty one pilots concert, I was a bit... confused as to why everyone got on their knees suddenly. Until I realized the beat was about to drop.
Another surprise was the lovely medley of The Pantaloon/Semi-Automatic/Forest/Screen/Addict With A Pen. I have to admit, I didn't know most of the songs, seeing as I'm more of a Vessel fan myself.
Ride and Holding On To You were the songs people were looking forward to (especially front row) because Tyler (during Holding On To You) and Josh (during Ride) actually got into the crowd. Or on top of it in Josh's case (that sounds so wrong). I'm not gonna lie, I was impressed by the strength of the front row that was able to hold up Josh AND his drum kit.
Great job, everyone! You deserve a metal!
Unfortunately it was almost time to leave, seeing as I had a train to catch (curse you, Deutsche Bahn!). My three personal favorites Tear In My Heart, Car Radio and Goner were played last and I actually had to make my way through the crowd towards the exit during Car Radio.
The funniest thing happened when I reached it, though: I suddenly heard Tyler say "Turn around! Turn around!" and I looked up to see he climbed on top of some pillar. He was literally in front of me and I was too shocked to do or say anything. Some guy who worked at the concert kept telling me to move away which confused me even more until I finally realized, oh, Tyler's about to walk past me.
I was centimetres away from the lead singer of twenty one pilots and I didn't even take a picture.
Great job, I definitely deserve a high five. In the face. With a fucking chair.
So, after recording Goner (a song that was so much more emotional live, it brought me to tears) I left the concert, knowing I wouldn't see Trees and would miss the best part of the concert.
And that was my first twenty one pilots concert!
My favorite thing of the evening was definitely the power of the crowd. Everyone was screaming along, jumping around, dancing and just generally having a great time.
What bothered me were three things, actually. First of all, they only sold shirts up to the size of XL. What's up with that, people? Secondly, I was missing some interaction with the crowd. I mean, twenty one pilots are no One Direction but none of them was actually really talking to the audience (except for the occassional YEAH YEAH and EH EH EH).
And last but not least, I didn't feel included / welcomed as a "casual fan". It's clear that The Clique's a tight-knit group and everyone who's not as hardcore as they are (or dares to criticize the band or one of the members) gets slayed mercilessly. There's also the possibility of me being too old. I saw a lot of parents having to accompany their kids because underage people weren't allowed at Astra Kulturhalle and other than that, everyone seemed to be around the age of 15 - 18 (max). But this is more of a personal problem than what bothered me about the performance itself.
Favorite song: Goner. Surprise of the evening: Doubt & Holding On To You. Favorite moment: Josh doing a backflip. Rating: 4 / 5
