opinion ramble incoming
idk I kind of saw the junkyard guy calling frankie “franklin” more like when people call someone whose name is “jim” “jimothy” as a joke, just with the junkyard guy being threatening instead of comical. I could even buy that he just genuinely thought her name was short for franklin or just picked any plausible unnickname and didn’t care whether or not that was a male name.
the fact that nobody seemed to make a big deal about him calling her franklin felt like the narrative playing with gender a bit, imo; interpreting it as transphobic misgendering feels like it takes away from that GNC-ness. and like, that encounter didn’t need to also have some guy misgendering a trans girl to be an unsettling scene, where he’s calling her by an unnickname like a parent scolding a child and also threatening her with pliers made of (probably her) teeth.
hell, frankie is already a gender-neutral name, which I adore, and until it was clarified her name is francesca, I could totally have bought that frankie is actually just short for franklin, like when girls irl are named logan or blake or dylan.
all of which is to say, I also didn’t immediately think trans despite being trans myself, and I definitely don’t think the creators should be getting shit for clarifying. if you want to have trans headcanons, great! that’s not how I read it, but that’s okay too! peace and love guys
