made myself sad last night, so here’s an old-timey perfect double-drabble of what could have been in the Immortals Quartet...
Daine glanced into a puddle and saw as from above two figures fighting back to back, together against a herd of armed and raging centaurs. No, not “together” - that implied the possibility of separation, and the Lioness and the Mage of Trebond fought like one being that happened to have two bodies. Where his side was exposed, there was her shield. Where her blade could not be, purple flame struck from his hand. Around them was night but they lit the field, gold armor and red hair and the building, blinding Gift of Trebond, violet as a flash of lightning.
Thom had been preparing something, in between blocking strikes with a shimmer in the air and returning them with fire. He finished it now with a shout, one hand on Alanna’s shoulder, and the magic flared out from them both. Where it swept across the field, the centaurs turned their axes and hooves on one another, frothing with battle-rage.
Alanna flung out her shield arm to catch her brother as he sagged, pale with exhaustion. She looked little better, though no fresh wounds marred her skin. They slipped off the battlefield, unnoticed by the still-warring centaurs, and the vision faded.
We can do what the Olaus have always done when the chips went down… Ignore our problems and drink heavily.
