You and Djed had been dating for about a year now. It started out as a friend of a friend situation until you inevitably crossed paths at a house party. With your locs falling slightly past your shoulders, and that unique blend of an earthy, quirky, yet confident aura, you had him completely intrigued. Djed couldn't help but walk right up to you to learn more, and it was history from there.
Now, yesterday, when he texted asking if you could retwist his hair, you agreed foolishly. He easily could’ve booked an appointment with a professional loctician, but he just wanted an excuse to see you. You learned how to retwist from maintaining your own hair. Plus he loved maintenance days with you, and honestly, he was just a little obsessed with being around you.
You agreed—what you didn't agree to was being woken out of a deep sleep by pounding on the door and twenty billion missed calls at the ass crack of dawn.
Stumbling to the door in one of his oversized hoodies that he didn't even know you’d stolen yet and a pair of shorts, your bonnet was completely crooked, looking like an absolute mess, maybe because you literally just woke up.
You opened the door, squinting against the morning light. "Djed… what are you doing here?" your voice came out raspy with sleep.
"You said you’d do my hair," he said effortlessly, letting himself in before your brain could even process what was happening.
"I didn't think you’d be here this early… ughhhh."
"Oh. My bad babes…" Djed paused, eyeing the familiar hoodie covering your frame. "Also… when did you take that hoodie?"
"Don't worry about it, just gimme a second."
Unbeknownst to you, he’d brought a box of ginger dye with him because his dark roots were growing back in. You just stood there, giving him a total blank stare as he pulled the box out of his bag with a smug grin. Today is going to be a long ass day, ugh.
He followed you into your bedroom and plopped right down on your bed, overly comfortable. He spent the next few minutes teasing you, going on and on about how good you looked fresh off the wake-up. You sat there wondering if he was actually being genuine or just trying to distract you from being irritated about the early wake-up call.
Fast forward to waiting for his dye to settle—you two plopped on the couch to find something to watch, and he somehow managed to manipulate the conversation into convincing you to dye your hair, too. So now, there you were, sitting next to him on the sofa with a couple of your own locs covered in the combo ginger dye.
When it was finally time to wash it out, Djed exaggerated every single reaction, groaning overly loud when your fingers scrubbed his scalp at the sink. The sound made your stomach flip a bit, making you snap at him to shut up while he protested with a grin. Afterward, he sat on the toilet with conditioner and a plastic bag wrapped around his head while you washed the dye from your own locs. He got a tad bit distracted… and touchy while waiting. The conditioner might’ve sat in his hair for a little too long, but too much moisture isn't a problem anyway.
Eventually, you washed the conditioner out, and then you were back on the couch while his hair towel-dried. Neither of you were in a rush considering he showed up at the break of dawn for god knows what, but Djed was making every task take ten hours by getting distracted and overly touchy unprovoked. It was hard to deny him—like, look at him—but the whole thing seemed completely intentional.
Next came play-fighting over the remote because you still couldn't decide what to watch. The wrestling for the remote escalated a little, but you guys finally compromised and decided to catch up on Love Island UK.
When it came time to style, you realized you hadn't eaten anything yet, so Djed ordered some food. Soon enough, you two were chilling at the kitchen island just eating, the whole vibe too comfortable and cute. He decided he wanted his signature style: clean barrels in the front and two strand twists hanging in the back. Who were you to complain? It looked good on him every single time.
Except instead of starting right away, Djed somehow lured you back to the couch to cuddle while watching Love Island. It was genuinely getting late now—proof that you guys had gotten very little done today. He simply refused to get up, and unfortunately (not really) for you, you didn't have the strength to push a whole 6'1" athlete off your lap.
You finally fussed enough for him to get up and sit back on the rug between your knees so you could actually finish his hair.
You sat on the cushion of the sofa, your legs wrapped loosely around Djed’s broad shoulders as he sat on the rug between your knees. The coffee table in front of you was a graveyard of today's events: discarded dye gloves, duckbill clips, a tub of loc gel, and the empty greasy wrappers of the takeout he’d ordered when your stomach finally started complaining loud enough to drown out the TV. Your own locs, freshly washed with a few rich streaks of ginger framing your face and resting against your glasses, were pinned up out of the way.
Djed was supposed to be watching the Love Island recoupling, but his head kept heavily leaning back against your thigh. The slow R&B track in the background was doing its job, breaking down whatever energy he had left.
"You're slumping, Spence," you murmured, tapping his shoulder with the back of your gel-covered finger. "Sit up a little bit. I'm on the last couple of barrels."
"I'm sitting," he mumbled, not moving an inch. His long legs were stretched all the way out across the rug, completely relaxed. "You just take too long. You’re doing that scalp massage stuff on purpose to put me out."
"what? I'm taking too long?" You paused, a barrel twist held firmly between your fingers, staring down at the back of his head with genuine disbelief. "Who knocked on my door at seven in the morning while I was dead asleep? Who brought surprise dye and convinced me to do my hair too? Who was getting all touchy and distracted while sitting on my toilet with a plastic bag on his head?"
Djed let out a cheap laugh, tilting his head back to look up at you upside down. The crisp, clean parts of his retwist made his face look even more defined, his dark eyes heavy and teasing under his eyelids.
"I had a vision for the day," he said smoothly, reaching up without looking to loop his long fingers around your wrist, his thumb tracing slow, warm circles against your pulse. Just like Syd was singing in the background he clearly had zero intention of rushing anything. "Can't blame a man for taking his time with his girl."
"You're ridiculous," you whispered, trying not to smile as you gently pushed his forehead back down with the flat of your hand. "Head down. Let me finish these front barrels so you can stop looking like a work in progress."
He hummed in compliance, but his hands didn't stray far, coming to rest comfortably over your ankles, his palms warm against your skin.
With every turn of your fingers, he was gassing you up under his breath.
"Look at the hands," he whispered, eyes half-closed as he caught your eye in the reflection of the TV. "Unmatched. Hands of an artist. The professionals couldn't even touch this."
"Keep boosting my ego like that and the tip better be crazy," you teased, smoothing down his baby hairs with a dab of edge control.
"Oh, you're getting taken care of," he purred, a lazy, cocky grin spreading across his face. "Full package."
Before you could even roast him for being corny, his breathing started to slow. The combination of the scalp massage, the music, and a full stomach knocked him clean out. Within five minutes, the 6'1" athlete was fast asleep, his head resting heavy right in your lap.
You sat there for a moment, hands resting on his freshly done head, looking down at him. The back pain from leaning over the couch all afternoon was very real, but looking at his face—totally peaceful, completely undone just by being around you—made it impossible to actually stay annoyed. He really had pulled out every trick in the book today just to stretch a retwist into a whole day of clinging to you.
You reached down and gently tapped his cheek. "Djed. Hey. Wake up."
He stirred, blinking slowly up through heavy lashes, looking disoriented for a second before that familiar smile returned. "Finished?"
"Finished," you said. "Go look."
He pushed himself up off the floor, stretching his long frame, and wandered into the bathroom. A second later, he walked back out, running his fingers lightly over the clean edges of his barrels.
"Nah, you actually killed this," he said, his eyes bright as he walked over to where you were stretching your sore back on the couch. "Look at me. Cleanest man in the city."
"Yeah, yeah. You owe me big time—"
Before you could finish, Djed moved fast. He caught you around the waist, scooping you up effortlessly and tackling you back into the couch cushions. You let out a muffled squeal as his weight pinned you down, his face burying into your neck as he peppered your cheeks and jaw with a barrage of loud, dramatic kisses.
"Babe, stop! Your hair—you're gonna mess up the fresh twists!" you gasped out, laughing as you tried to push his shoulders away, but it was like trying to move concrete.
"Don't care," he mumbled against your skin, catching your lips in a warm, lingering kiss that instantly melted your fake resistance. He pulled back just an inch, his eyes dark and warm as he looked down at you. "Told you. I'm not going anywhere tonight."
You raised an eyebrow, your hands resting on his shoulders. "Oh really? And what about your clothes? Your toothbrush?"
Djed leaned down, kissing the tip of your nose with a cheeky, triumphant smirk.
"Already brought my overnight bag in from the car when you were in the shower, babes. Plan was set since 7 AM."
You shook your head with a soft laugh, pulling the throw blanket up over both of your shoulders as he settled over you, the soft rhythm of Hold On wrapping around the quiet room.
