Yesterday the older kid had a track meet, and since this is our first year of high school track there's a lot we don't know. Like the length of the meets. My kid competes in two races, the rest of the time he's chilling.
Well, the meet started at 3:00 and he didn't get back to the high school until just after 11:00pm. The weather went from sunny with some wind, to overcast and chilly, to cold and rainy during that time.
My kid didn't take the 20 bucks I told him to, so he had to borrow money for a small piece of pizza. He also didn't pack the sweatpants I told him to, so he was in shorts most of the time.
Then it started to rain. He was miserable.
I made sure to be at the high school well before the bus arrived so that he wouldn't have to wait. I also brought some goldish crackers, a bottle of water and turned on the heated seats. He was very thankful.
When I say that I have never seen a more miserable bunch of kids trudge through the parking lot - I have never. Everyone looked so sad, most were walking briskly, including mine which never happens. He meanders, he doesn't even walk. But he walked very quickly to my car.
I shouldn't find it amusing, but I did. He won't leave without money again (although I did shove two granola bars at him, so he had those).
