Easy way to train a dog to stay

Training your pet to “stay” is a handy tool. How many of us have seen our dogs running towards us after playing in the mud with grime all over their body? Or in the water and now their fur is wet and it’s running to you at top speed and you have no time to change from the new shirt you just bought to something that wouldn’t bring you too much sorrow if it’s damaged? This is a situation when you would realise that you should have invested some time to train a dog to stay when asked to.

In such times, your only solution is to communicate, somehow, to your pet, that coming closer is bad, and that they need to stop and stay. Moreover, the reason why you need to train a dog to stay is that it is one of the stepping stones of the pet’s training process. It gives you more control over what your pet does and where it goes and also helps establish authority.

The training process starts with you choosing a position you want your pet to stay in. This could be a sitting position, or you would want your pet to lie down, or you would want them to stand at attention. Either way, remember that since your pet will associate the stay command with this position forever, and choose it wisely. Bear in mind your pet’s comfort. A standing position may tire him or her out within minutes and would be difficult to maintain. Lying down may make them lethargic or sleepy. Moreover, always keep in mind of the floor you’re asking pet to stop on. Nobody wants a puppy to lie on a cold, hard floor.

The next step is choosing the verbal commands. You will need two commands- one to make them stay in a position, and one to release them from that position. If you talk to your dog in the same pitch as you talk normally, make sure these commands aren’t words you use in normal conversations (like “Okay” or “hey”), for the pet may take this as a command and stop or move accordingly, even when it is not. Using words like “Stay” and “Leave” is advisable. The words that you use to train a dog to stay should be legibly and audibly different from each other.

To train your dog, first find them in a time when they’re well exercised and relaxed. It will be harder to teach an active puppy to stay in one place- and all dog owners know the reason why. Ask your dog to lie down. Point at the floor. When it does, wait for a minute before giving him a treat. The treat could be any small snack that is not too filling and is liked by your pet. When the dog sits down, reinforce and reward them with the treat. Then, using the verbal command you chose for leaving, ask the dog to get up. Show another treat to him, and when it gets up, wait a little before you say “Yes!” and reward him.

The stay time needs to progress slowly. You cannot expect your dog to stay down for half an hour in the first session. So, keep extending it slowly and progressively. If the pet bounces, delay the stay time further until it shows signs of stopping. Soon, the animal will catch on.

Always remember to deliver these treats between your dog’s front teeth. If you hover it over the snout, it will see the treat coming and not understand the purpose of the practice.

However, one must always understand that training is a cumulation of several factors. Even in the case of stay training, you need to keep distances and distractions in mind. Staying in a place gets harder for the dog with increased time. So, instead, make sure you vary your distance.

Sometimes, to make them get up, use a distraction such as a ball instead of a treat. The aim is not making your dog stay for the maximum hours, it is making sure your dog never breaks its stay even for a short duration.

The last thing to keep in mind is to never use the “Stay” cue during unpleasant situations for the dog, such as when you’re clipping its nails or leaving for work, for then the pet associates the command with actions that make him sad, and would be reluctant to do it again. With time and a lot of patience, your dog may be able to master stay training, but one must remember that it does not happen in a day, and that your dog is not a training tool but your friend– therefore, one must handle the pet with care and love.

There is no rocket science while you train a dog to stay, just patience and love is the key.
